As the demand for high energy density and reliable power sources for new electric vehicles and portable electronic devices increases, the rechargeable metal-air batteries (MABs) have received lots of focus due to their high theoretical energy density and environmental-friendly characteristics. To overcome the technical challenges for commercialization, a highly active and durable electrocatalyst on the cathode side is required to boost the electrochemical reactions during discharging and charging of rechargeable metal-air batteries. This thesis deals with the key issues essential to MABs, including the development of new non-precious cathode materials with high activity and durability. In the first chapter, a highly efficient bifunctional C-Pd/Co(OH)2 composite as a cathode catalyst is developed and used as air electrode for Zn-air and Li-O2 batteries. The C-Pd/Co(OH)2 catalyst exhibits extraordinary ORR activity in 0.1 M KOH, with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.87 V and 390 mV overpotential at 10 mAcm-2 OER current density, resulting in promising overall oxygen redox reaction potential. Once the C-Pd/Co(OH)2 was engineered as an air electrode for Zn-air and Li-O2 batteries, a specific capacity of 766 mAhgZn-1 and 17,698 mAhg-1 have been achieved, respectively. Especially, Li-O2 battery shows stable cycling over 50 cycles without significant voltage loss, and Zn-air battery presents excellent discharge and charge potentials (ΔEc-d = 0.69 V) with improved round trip efficiency. The results provide an idea for the design and demonstration of new bifunctional electrocatalysts for the Zn-air and Li-O2 battery systems. In the second part of research, we firstly investigated the performance of Li-O2 battery based on Nd0.35Sr0.65Co0.8Nb0.2O3-δ (NSCNO) as an air cathode material which was developed by co-doping of the A-site with Nd3+ and the B-site with Nb5+. The comparative study on OER catalytic activities of this new material was made from the various aspects of the crystallinity, calcination temperature effect, and electrochemical performance of the Li-O2 battery cathodes. The synergistic effect between the A and B site cations was confirmed, which leads to a significant improvement in the activity for the OER at Li-O2 batteries. In the last chapter, hierarchical spinel bimetallic sulfide nanostructures in-situ grown on either carbon cloth or S-doped graphene is synthesized and used as cathode electrocatalyst in Zn-air and Li-O2 batteries. The most active NiCo2S4 nanosheets on carbon cloth as air cathode exhibits excellent durability and electrocatalytic activity in zinc−air batteries compared with the precious metal-based catalyst. The NiCo2S4/S-doped graphene air cathode exhibits a remarkable specific capacity of 14,173 mA h g−1 at 150 mAg−1 and is stable more than 1704 h with a limited capacity of 1000 mA hg−1. This study offers a promising strategy to make improvements in Zn-air and Li-O2 battery performance by tailoring the surface properties of the air cathode. A study on the development of new electrode catalysts, that can replace the existing low stability and expensive noble metal cathode catalysts, can contribute to accelerate the commercialization of metal air batteries.
