Education through play can be said to be the most basic and fundamental philosophy and belief, teaching and learning method in early childhood education. Also, the importance of play has been emphasized since ancient scholars of BC. Recently, the importance of infant play has emerged worldwide. In Korea, education through play is also emphasized through early childhood education policy. In May 2019, “Children's Policy of Inclusive Countries” was announced to expand national responsibility for children, and it included “Schools that increase their potential through creative play” in the four core tasks. In addition, in 2017, the ``Infant Education Innovation Plan'' was announced, and the contents of the education paradigm shift centered on infants were presented. On the basis of this, The revised Nuri Curriculum of 2019 was revised and announced in the basic direction of 'infant-centered', 'play-centered', and 'strengthening teacher autonomy'.
Since the curriculum through play has been continuously operated so far, it has not been clearly understood how to operate the play-centered curriculum in a different way from before, many early childhood teachers in the current field are confused about how to operate the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum (Huh Min-jung, 2020). Education through play is not newly introduced in accordance with the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum. Korea has traditionally presented educational play as an important teaching principle in the national kindergarten curriculum (the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Health and Welfare, 2012; Ministry of Education, 1998a; Ministry of Education, Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, 2008). Then, it is necessary to understand the change of the play in the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum and what is the same and difference as the previous kindergarten curriculum. To do this, it is necessary to explore and organize how play has been presented and changed in the national kindergarten curriculum. The historical changes of the curriculum are important to have an important meaning by examining the factors that continuously affect the curriculum or overlooked factors (Park Sun-hye, 2014) and it is important to look at the historical changes from the time when the national kindergarten curriculum was first established (Jeon Seon-ok, 1997).
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore how play has been dealt with from the first kindergarten curriculum, which is a kindergarten curriculum in Korea, to the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum.,To achieve the purpose of this study, the following research questions were set up.
Research Question 1. How has the 'play' been presented in the national kindergarten curriculum from the first kindergarten curriculum in Korea to the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum?
For this purpose, this study examined the literature of the national kindergarten curriculum from the first kindergarten curriculum to the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum, and explored previous studies related to play, early childhood curriculum and kindergarten curriculum. Through this, we found out 'play' in kindergarten curriculum for each degree and compared it.
The major results of this study are as follows.
First, it was suggested that all curriculums except the first and fourth kindergarten curriculum should operate or organize the curriculum through play in the organization and operation of the general discussion.
Second, from the 6th kindergarten curriculum, the contents of play are stated in 'teaching and learning method', and it is suggested that educational activities should be centered on play. In particular, in the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum, three of the seven items of teaching and learning methods are presented about play, and it can be seen that the play-centered curriculum is emphasized more.
Third, although there is a change in the name of the area according to the change of the curriculum, most of the play was presented in the 'physical exercise and health area' based on the name of the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum. In other words, the play has been consistently presented from the first except for the third kindergarten curriculum and the fourth kindergarten curriculum, and the contents have changed from 'raising basic athletic ability through play' (the 1st&2nd kindergarten curriculum) to 'playing safely' (from the 6th kindergarten curriculum to the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum).
Fourth, Based on the 2019 revision Nuri curriculum, the area of art experience has undergone changes from entertainment, expression, to art experience. In this area, play was continuously presented except for the second, third, and fourth. Especially, play was described continuously as a type of play in this area, dance play and musical instrument play were specified in the first kindergarten curriculum, and dramatic play was presented from the 5th kindergarten curriculum to the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum.
Fifth, although the name of the area has been changed according to the change of the curriculum, play has been continuously presented except for the second and third kindergarten curriculum and the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum in the area corresponding to social relations based on the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum. In more detail, role play was presented in the 6th kindergarten curriculum and the 2007 revised kindergarten curriculum, and traditional play was presented in the 5th kindergarten curriculum and the 2012 revised Nuri curriculum.
The conclusions of this study are as follows.
First, in the national kindergarten curriculum in Korea, it can be said that the curriculum through play has been pursued continuously. From the first kindergarten curriculum to the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum, play was presented in general and various fields. Especially, play was consistently presented in the composition, operation, teaching and learning methods. In the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum, it was emphasized to specify the contents related to play in three items of teaching and learning methods. This suggests that the importance of play in kindergarten education will be enhanced.
Second, the scope of play meaning is widening in the kindergarten curriculum. In other words, in the second kindergarten curriculum, "the type of learning activity should be able to sustain the interest of the child based on play," suggesting play as one of the learning methods that attract the participation of the child. However, in the 2012 Nuri curriculum, the meaning of the curriculum was expanded to be composed of the learning experience derived from the play of the infant, saying, "Let the activity be selected and continued with the interest of the infant." And "Let the teaching and learning activities be done with the play as the center.",This means that the curriculum is formed as the children freely participate in the play.,The play that is voluntarily expressed from the interest and interest of the child can be a meaningful educational experience for the child, so it is very important to expand the meaning of play in the national kindergarten curriculum.
In this regard, the results of comparative analysis of the presented parts of play in the process of changing the kindergarten curriculum at the national level of Korea show that the curriculum through play has been pursued steadily, and the importance of play itself as well as play as teaching and learning methods is more emphasized in the recent curriculum.
