The purpose of this study is to explore the benefits of mobile application-based writing in primary English classes using picture books. Based on the researcher's actual class experience and the opinions of other teachers working at the researcher's school, this study was conducted to make suggestions on how to promote the use of mobile application-based English writing classes. This study explored the following research two research questions.
1. What are the benefits of mobile application-based writing using picture books in a primary English class? 2. What measures are needed to activate mobile application-based English writing classes? To find answers to the research questions, an experimental class was conducted with one class in the sixth grade at T Elementary School in Seoul. The participants read picture books and did writing tasks using mobile applications according to each topic. During the experimental class, data was analyzed qualitatively by coding and categorizing after collecting various samples. Pre-and post-survey questionnaires, students’ writings, interviews, journals of the students and the researcher, class recordings, other teachers’ survey and interview data were all accounted. The analysis of the data resulted in two conclusions. To begin, there are three main benefits of mobile application-based writing. First, students were able to enjoy writing through the functions of mobile applications. By choosing the font of preferred text, students were able to experience the fun of writing. They could use a template that was already made and it helped them to think less about which items to set up and write. In addition, various images allowed them to visualize the contents of the text and deliver it efficiently. Individuals were able to use the photos they took themselves in writing that linked to their experiences. Second, the process of writing using search tools such as web dictionaries and web translators could be activated. Students could feel the convenience of research directly by searching for words they didn't know through a web dictionary. The effects of learning words and gaining new knowledge was also shown. In the process of searching sentences with a web translator, students also developed various search strategies. Moreover, the preferred search tools for each English level were different and students could set their own standards and search. Third, content-oriented comment interaction using picture book expressions were developed when sharing stage of writing results. Students were able to gain feedback skills from the initial simple response to the use of daily expressions after mini lessons. Next, the ways to promote mobile application-based English writing classes could be suggested. First, environment improvement is required for mobile application-based classes. Problems such as installing WiFi, installing a TV with a large screen that enables smart mirroring, and assigning a student's personal Google account in batches should be taken into consideration. Second, an improved application as a writing practice tool is needed. If there is an application that can selectively utilize writing editing and storage functions, various design elements, like and comment functions, teachers will be able to use it more effectively in their writing class. Third, there is a need for teacher education that could change teachers' insufficient knowledge and interest, limited experience, fixed ideas, and attitude of rejecting change. The implications of this study for primary English education are as follows. First, this study showed the possibility that mobile applications could be used as new teaching tools for English writing classes in a primary setting. Based on the benefits of applying mobile applications to writing classes, new tools need to be utilized according to the situation. Second, amid the rapidly changing trend of the times, this study investigated how school should change and what preparations would be needed. It is meaningful in that it not only suggested ways to improve the environment for mobile application-based writing classes, but also suggested directions to move forward by understanding the usual perceptions and conditions teachers have about mobile-based classes. Third, the results of this study suggested a realistic improvement in the development direction of educational writing applications. If educational writing mobile applications are developed by referring to the terms of the mobile applications proposed in this study, it will satisfy not only students but also teachers. Despite the above positive implications, this study has some limitations. First, the results of the study did not reveal the improvement of student's writing skills. Second, it failed to advance to student's self-directed learning by reflecting the characteristics of mobile applications that can be used anytime and anywhere. Third, it failed to solve the problem of English comprehension during the writings sharing activity. Based on the results of this study, the following suggestions for further research could be made. It is necessary to find out how mobile application-based writing works in terms of improving English writing skills in comparison to analog writing on paper with pencils. Based on the joy of writing felt through the mobile application, it is necessary to see if the motivation for self-directed writing can continue. In addition, since this study was focused on mobile application-based write activity itself, it did not spend much time on sharing activities. Follow-up studies will be needed to supplement the current findings.
