Self-esteem is a subjective judgment or evaluation of an individual's abilities or values. People with high self-esteem understand their feelings well, so their ability to empathize with others' feelings is also excellent. Contrary to the significance of self-esteem, however, recent society has encouraged competition and comparison to individuals, and children have become accustomed to competition with peers both inside and outside of school. Childhood is an important period in which the foundation for self-esteem is formed and developed. Therefore, it is necessary for parents and teachers to create a physical and psychological environment so that children can maintain a high level of self-esteem at home and school. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors of self-esteem related mechanism of brain and to suggest educational implications. First, the manifestation factors of self-esteem were analyzed based on the basic concept of self-esteem. Next, this study revealed how people can understand the factors that manifest self-esteem in brain science. Finally, based on the understanding of brain science, educational implications applicable to teaching and learning situations were presented. Human thoughts and emotions are actions that occur in the brain. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of thought and emotion action by brain science and analyzing it based on the results of cognitive science research will help children to understand intrinsically. Self-esteem can be categorized into four categories: significant others, history of successes, individual’s values and aspirations, and manner of responding to devaluation. The brain-scientific understanding of self-esteem manifestation is as follows. First, ‘significant others’ can be understood as mirror neurons and the triune brain. Children model desirable behaviors of others. In order for the mirror neurons involved in modeling to function well, the action of the triune brain, consisting of the cerebral cortex, the limbic system, and the brainstem, is important. Second, ‘history of successes’ is closely related to the development of dopamine and the cerebral cortex. Dopamine, the nerve center of pleasure, is secreted near the midbrain. Therefore, when people have achieved a difficult task with patience, the A10 nerve nucleus expands to the neocortex, making it feel immersive. Third, ‘individual’s values and aspirations’ are related to brain plasticity and the expansion of synapses. Brain plasticity means that the synapse is reconstructed and elaborated. The brain prunes synapses with low activation frequency, and diverse and repetitive experiences in childhood help to expand synapses. Fourth, ‘manner of responding to devaluation’ can be explained by the action of the limbic system and the hippocampus. In children, the development of the frontal lobe that controls the amygdala is immature. In particular, when a child is severely exposed to stress, cortisol is secreted excessively, suppressing the function of the hippocampus. Examining the manifestation factors of self-esteem from a brain science perspective helps to systematically and scientifically understand self-esteem. The educational implications based on the brain-scientific understanding of self-esteem manifestation are as follows. First, it is necessary to induce desirable modeling and create a stable environment. Parents and teachers should be polite, permissive, and interested because they are significant others and high-quality modeling targets. To provide a stable environment for children, reduce behaviors that cause excessive stress and tension. Second, it is necessary to expand the achievement experience and strengthen language feedback. In everyday life, children are provided with simple tasks or performances to increase the frequency of achievement experiences. Language feedback should be provided continuously, not one-time, during the performance process. Third, provide a variety of experiences and consider individual child characteristics. The play that utilizes the five senses helps the development of the brain evenly. In order to consider individual child characteristics, it is necessary to compliment each child's individual strengths based on the theory of multi-intelligence and to teach and learn reflecting personality types. Fourth, it is necessary to guide the emotion control strategy and make pleasure-based learning. Children must be able to recognize a variety of emotions. Next, they must be able to express their perceived emotions correctly. Physical activities such as exercise secrete neurotransmitters such as dopamine, endorphins and serotonin, making the child positive. Self-esteem is a key factor in meeting the fundamental needs of human happiness. At the same time, it is the ultimate goal of education that self-esteem develops so that children grow up properly and realize self. This study is significant in that it analyzes the manifestation factors of self-esteem and presents educational implications from a brain science perspective. Based on this study, it is hoped that a follow-up study will derive educational implications based on objective data using brain imaging devices. In addition, it is hoped that a specific teaching and learning program applicable in front-line schools will be developed.
