The new product adoption related to self-control is low. The paper aims to prove whether recognizing consumers’ needs for self-control in the first stage of consumers’ decision-making process (the stage of needs recognition) and the goal gradient hypothesis are conducive to achieve self-control and enhance the new product adoption. In Hypothesis 1, the new product adoption enhances when the needs is recognized in the goal gradient hypothesis. In Hypothesis 2, the goal gradient hypothesis has different impacts on the new product adoption as the ability of self-control varies. Two experiments were carried out to prove both hypotheses. To ensure external feasibility, HD9641/45 and a Phillips air fryer were used in Experiment 1, while Galaxy Home Mini and Samsung Electronics’ AI speaker were adopted in Experiment 2. Next, an advertising slogan was respectively written in imitation of the advertisements of Phillips and Samsung Electronics’ website. According to the results of Experiment 1, the adoption intention of the air fryer was enhanced by needs recognition in the goal gradient hypothesis. The results of Experiment 2 showed the adoption intention of the AI speaker was enhanced by needs recognition in the goal gradient hypothesis when the ability of self-control was low. By comparison, needs recognition in the goal gradient hypothesis did not enhance the adoption intention of the AI speaker significantly when the self-control ability was high. The paper proved through two experiments that recognizing consumers’ needs for self-control in the goal gradient hypothesis raised the possibility of adopting the air fryer and AI speaker. Using the principles of behavioral economics, the paper was the first to prove that recognizing consumers’ needs for self-control was conducive to enhance the new product adoption related to self-control. The research findings of the paper have provided new thoughts for the advertisement creators and marketing personnel for air fryers and AI speakers.
