The study sought to identify differences in perceptions of the role of middle managers and actual levels recognized by daycare center teachers. The following research issues were established with the aim of providing data on how to improve the quality of daycare centers in order to minimize conflicts over the role of middle managers of daycare centers and enhance the structure and efficiency of daycare centers. First, is there a difference in the role expectations and actual levels of the middle manager’s operation management area recognized by the child care teacher? Second, is there a difference in the actual level of expectation for the role of the middle manager in the education operation recognized by the child care teacher? Third, is there a difference in the expected-real level of the role of the middle manager in the autonomous field of education recognized by the child care teacher? Fourth, is there a difference between the role expectations and the actual level of the middle manager in the personnel management area recognized by the child care teacher? Fifth, is there a difference between the expected level and the actual level of the role of the middle manager in the financial and office management areas recognized by the child care teacher? Sixth, is there a difference between expectations and actual levels in the area of community relationships of middle managers recognized by child care teachers? To carry out the research, 410 child care teachers from daycare centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon visited them in person from Oct. 2 to Oct. 16, 2019, distributing and retrieving the questionnaire using mail, e-mail, Google-form, and using part 309 questionnaire as final analysis data. The response sample t-test was conducted to examine the difference in the actual level of expectations for the role of the intermediate manager, and the study results based on the research problems were as follows. First, the analysis results of the difference between expected and actual levels for the role of the middle managers in the operation and management area showed the difference between expectations (4.34) and actual (4.05). It was analyzed that ‘Planning and Practical Assessment’ was the highest item in both the expectation and the actual level, and ‘Use of Evaluation Results’ was the biggest difference between expected and actual levels. Second, an analysis of the difference between the expected and actual levels of the role of the intermediate manager in the operation area of the child care program showed the difference between the expected (4.36) and the actual (4.11). The place where expectations were highest was "child welfare facilities," and the highest level of reality was "living guidance and counseling." The biggest difference between expected and actual levels is analyzed as ‘development of personality and aptitude’. Third, the difference between the expected level and the actual level of the role of the autonomous sector of the middle manager was analyzed and the actual level was different from the actual level (4.29). ‘Environment of Research Activities’ and ‘Providing Data for Professional Improvement’ were the most anticipated items, while the top items were ‘Environment of Research and Dinner Activities’. It is analyzed that ‘providing data for professional improvement’ is the biggest difference between expected and actual levels. Fourth, the analysis of the difference between the expected and actual level of the middle manager's role in the personnel field showed the difference between the expected (4.35) and the actual (4.05). Items with the highest level of expectations were ‘business division, management of the homeroom organization’, while those with the highest level of realism were ‘fair work balance’. It is analyzed that "raising morale of teachers" is the biggest difference between expected and actual levels. Fifth, the actual level of analysis for the role of intermediate managers in the financial and office management fields differed between expectations (4.39) and actual (4.16). Items with the highest level of expectations were ‘teacher management’ and those with the highest level of actuality were ‘study support system’ and ‘document collection and official management’. It was analyzed that ‘Management of teaching aids’ is the biggest difference between expected and actual levels. Sixth, an analysis of differences in expectations-actual levels for the role of middle managers in the community showed differences between expectations (4.39) and actual (4.18). It was analyzed that the ‘parent group’ item was the highest in both expected and real levels, while ‘other community group relationships’ showed the biggest difference between the expected level and the actual level. These results suggest that the child care middle manager of the daycare center should understand exactly the education philosophy and operation policies of the director as an middle manager and thus play a role in helping the daycare center operate efficiently. It should also improve working conditions at daycare centers to establish the legal status of daycare centers’ principal teachers, provide opportunities for teacher education and training, and serve as middle managers.
