The rapid growth and development of Korea achieved material affluence, but caused various urban and social problems. In response, the central government and local governments launched urban regeneration projects focused on the regeneration of local communities so that they could form a community culture through the improvement of living conditions and the supply of public spaces in aging and declining urban dwellings. However, as a result of the implementation of major projects focusing on physical space supply and environmental improvement, communities were formed in a formal manner with a lack of participation and activities by residents. Thus, a small community center established as a local community hub was reduced to a nuisance for the villagers.
Accordingly, the government encourages residents-led projects by organizing communities and discovering village projects through support from expert groups, and organizes community spaces with various functions such as living facilities for residents, job creation, and health support spaces within community centers and operates programs.
Centering on this background, this study was intended to present basic data that could be applied to small community centers in the future by examining the current situation of small community centers established so far and analyzing various aspects of community centers, including functions and spaces.
This study examined the status of small community centers that opened after 2000 located in Daegu and Busan. The basic item current situation of a small community center was investigated and the characteristics of each item were analyzed, suggesting what should be considered when devising the functions and programs of the community center.
In particular, the main functions of small community centers were divided into ①Education functions, ②Work functions, ③Cafe functions, ④Health care functions, and ⑤Multi functions, and the characteristics of major functions were classified based on the current situation of small community centers.
In addition, local governments, private enterprise, and village cooperatives were classified according to the operation and management entities. The functions of small community centers are closely related to the spatial composition and programs of community centers, and the characteristics of each spatial organization are divided into areas by major functions, access types, and floor plan composition methods. Each characteristic was analysed through examples and further complementary directions were presented.
Therefore, in this thesis studied the current situation and functional characteristics of small community centers in urban areas that have not been dealt with before, and provides data that can be used in planning small community centers in urban areas in the future.
