Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys have attracted attention in industries that require lightweight materials owing to their low density, easy manufacturability, and dependable functionality. In particular, extruded Mg materials have a high potential for industrial applications in a variety of industries because they can be easily fabricated into various shapes; they also have superior strength and ductility compared to cast materials. However, to achieve the industrial application of extruded Mg materials, it is essential to improve their mechanical properties and price competitiveness when compared with competing materials such as aluminum and steel. In this thesis, therefore, the focus has been placed on improving the mechanical properties of extruded Mg materials by promoting their dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and dynamic precipitation (DP) through alloy design using low-cost/small-quantity alloying elements and simple process control. In Chapter 3, the effect of adding 0.5 wt% Ca and 0.2 wt% Y on DRX behavior of the Mg–3Al–1Zn–0.2Mn (wt%) alloy and the resulting mechanical properties of the extruded alloy were investigated. The combined addition of Ca and Y led to the formation of thermally stable second-phase particles. These undissolved particles acted as nucleation sites for DRX during extrusion, effectively increasing the DRX fraction. In addition, they caused the material to deform more severely during extrusion, thereby increasing the residual strain in the unDRXed grains, which in turn decreased the DRXed grain size. The strength of the extruded alloy with Ca and Y added was improved owing to increased DRX fraction, refined grains, increased internal strain energy, and dispersed particles. Despite the dispersion of undissolved particles, the tensile elongation hardly decreased because area fraction reduction of unDRXed grains suppressed the formation of twins that act as initiation sites for microcracks during tensile deformation. In Chapter 4, the effect of residual particles within the homogenized billet on the DRX and DP behaviors during extrusion of the precipitation-hardenable Mg–7Sn–1Al–1Zn (wt%) alloy were analyzed through the addition of alloys and homogenization temperature control. It was found that the addition of Ce resulted in the formation of a thermally stable Ce3Sn5 phase and that a decrease in homogenization temperature caused an undissolved Mg2Sn phase to remain in the homogenized billets. These particles provided effective nucleation sites for DRX. However, with an increase in the amount of second-phase particles, the number of fine Mg2Sn dynamic precipitates decreased gradually owing to a reduction in the amount of Sn dissolved in the matrix. The tensile strength of the extruded alloys decreased with an increasing amount of second-phase particles, mainly because of the reduced number of precipitates and enlarged grain size. In Chapter 5, the effect of the addition of 4 wt% Al on DRX and DP behaviors of the Mg–7Sn–1Zn (wt%) alloy and the resulting mechanical properties of the extruded alloy were investigated. The 4 wt% Al addition dramatically increased the DRX fraction, which was mainly attributed to the increase in the amount of residual Mg2Sn particles and grain boundaries in the homogenized billet and the increase in stress applied during extrusion. The amount of fine Mg2Sn precipitates of the extruded alloy also increased owing to an increased number of nucleation sites for precipitation caused by the 4 wt% Al addition, which led to a reduction of the DRXed grain size. These microstructural changes improved both the strength and ductility of the extruded alloy, and significantly reduced tension-compression yield asymmetry. In Chapter 6, the effects of artificial cooling during extrusion on DP behavior and extrudability of Mg–9Al–1Zn–0.2Mn (wt%) alloy were investigated. The artificial cooling system dramatically reduced the actual temperature in the deformation zone during extrusion, increasing the maximum exit speed at which the alloy can be extruded without hot cracking. The artificial cooling also lowered the Al solubility and increased the stress imposed on the billet during extrusion, which led to the formation of numerous precipitates throughout the extruded alloy. As a result, the extrudability and mechanical properties of the Mg alloy were improved simultaneously via the artificial water cooling during extrusion. In this thesis, it is demonstrated that low-cost/small-quantity alloying addition and simple process control significantly facilitated DRX and DP of Mg alloys during extrusion, effectively improving the mechanical properties of the extruded Mg alloys. These studies are expected to be the basis for expanded industrial application of the Mg alloys in various industries in the future by providing solutions for improving their mechanical properties and price competitiveness.
