Backgroud and Purpose : Brain-dead organ donation is a cure for organ transplants that give new life hopes to patients whose organs are impaired and who can no longer live normal lives. The number of brain-dead organ donors in Korea is relatively small compared to other countries, and medical staff's negative attitude toward organ donation is a factor in the decrease in organ donation rates. The purpose of this study is to identify the death perception and death attitude of surgical medical staff participating in brain death organ transplantation, and to understand their impact on post-brain death organ donation attitudes.
Research Method : This study is a descriptive research study conducted at a higher general hospital from March 23 to May 12, 2020. The subjects of this study were doctors and nurses who participated in organ transplant surgery for brain-dead people more than once, and a total of 120 people were surveyed through face-to-face surveys. The data collection of this study used structured self-reporting questionnaire to investigate the perception of death, the attitude of death and post-brain death organ donation attitude from the perspective of death.
Research results : From the perspective of death, the average score of the detailed items of death recognition was 3.35 ± 0.58 for the negativeness of death, 3.20 ± 0.52 for the positive of death, 2.95 ± 0.77 for the will to respect life, 2.76 ± 0.90 for the anxiety of death and 2.6 ± 0.79 for the interest in death. The average score of the detailed items of death attitude was 5.52 ± 0.97 for neutral acceptance, 3.02 2 1.39 for fear of death, 3.00 ± 1.42 for approach acceptance, 2.86 ± 1.30 for escape acceptance, and 2.60 ± 1.19 for avoidance of death. A multi-regression analysis using input method regarding factors related to post-brain-death organ donation revealed the following results: position (β=.253, p=.023), number of times brain dead organ transplants participated (β=-.164, p=.021), whether or not organ donation is desired (β=.240, p=.037), a life-respecting will (β=.220, p=.013), and neutral acceptance (β=.221, p=.002).
Conclusions : Neutral acceptance and respect for the death of the surgical staff involved in the transplantation of brain-dead organs have been the most important factors that affect post-brain-death organ donation attitudes. Therefore, in order to establish a positive perception of the post-brain-death attitude of organ donation, the positive attitude of the surgical team will be improved by increasing the neutral acceptance of death and awareness of positive respect for life.
