Securing sufficient oxygen concentration is essential in order to prevent suffocation accidents when working in a confined space where oxygen concentration may be insufficient. Oxygen concentration in the air is 20.9 %, but less than 18% can lead to suffocation accidents. Therefore, sufficient oxygen concentration should be secured through ventilation before work begins in places where oxygen deficiency is feared. The purpose of this study is to estimate the ventilation time required from less than 10% oxygen concentration to 20.9% oxygen concentration, which can be a condition of suffocation due to oxygen deficiency. The ventilation experiment was compared with One-Box Model through the ventilation experiment regarding to the size of the enclosed space and the ventilation capacity of the fan. The ventilation time was presented to secure oxygen concentration regarding on the air ventilation capacity of each fan in various sizes which is used for ventilation. The results of the experiment were as follow. Nitrogen gas was injected into a space of 72 ㎥ to reduce oxygen concentration to 10vol% and 20.9vol% oxygen concentration was obtained by using two methods of intake and exhaust with an air blast capacity of 1,988 ㎥/h and when the results were compared with One-Box Model theory, very similar ventilation time was identified. And also, ventilation tests were conducted with a ventilator of 72 ㎥/h with a size of 1.2 ㎥ to compare the size of the enclosed space with the ventilation capacity of the ventilator, which was confirmed to form a proportional relationship. Considering the size of the enclosed space and the ventilation capacity of the ventilator used for ventilation, One-Box Model can be applied to estimate the ventilation time required to secure oxygen concentration in various oxygen-deficient locations, which to judge from these tests can prevent suffocation accidents from happening.
