The purpose of this study was to compare maintenance and cessation groups of non-suicidal self-injury in young adults, particularly based on the benefits and barriers model of non-suicidal self-injury (Hooley & Franklin, 2018). Young adults with history of non-suicidal self-injury during adolescence completed a set of self-report questionnaires assessing non-suicidal self-injury, emotion regulation, self-esteem, communication competence, and belongingness, along with depression and perceived stress. Results indicated that compared with the cessation group, the non-suicidal self-injury maintenance group had more difficulty in emotion regulation and lower self-esteem, but no group difference was found in communication competence and belongingness. Also, the maintenance group had higher scores on depression and perceived stress than the cessation group. The results of multivariate logistic regression indicated that only depression and non-acceptance of emotion, the subscale of emotional dysregulation scale, aomg all predictors had a significant effect on the maintenance of non-suicidal self-injury in young adults. The results of this study suggest that psychological interventions focusing on depression and the acceptance of negative emotions may be helpful in reducing non-suicidal self-injury in young adults.
