In this study, I carried out the analysis of representative works of 4 dancers from a different country. South Korea, China in East Asia area, Germany in Europe where the genre of contemporary dance was initially conceived and lastly US. Furthermore, for understanding the progress of contemporary dance’ evolution and the traditional parts reflected on the dance of aforementioned 4 dancers, I did comparison work of the 4 dancers’ personal belief and their representative works. Therefore, Kim Bok-Hee (South Korea), Jin Xing (金星, China), Pina Bausch (Germany) and Isadora Duncan (US) are shortlisted as a contemporary dancer in this thesis and their own representative contemporary dance works are selected for this study.
Through the following summaries of each dancer’ work and their belief, I made a clear direction of this study and its approach method. Kim Bok-Hee. Many critics in South Korea consider Kim Bok-Hee as the most unique and eminent dancer in South Korea, distinguishing her dance fully colored with Korean tradition from others. Her main work, 「The marriage of blood」 is a reinterpretation of the traditional Korean styles from the oriental view, including the Buddhism. Under her personal belief in the Korean style contemporary dance, she has been devoting herself to recreating the contemporary dance by adding the unique gestures she created by the inspirations she felt from Korean culture. However, in her other work「Cheon Hyeong, The Wagon of Life 」, her performance after reading the Victor Hugo’ book , she put an emphasis on the rather more commonly acceptable emotion that is ‘Not only Quasimodo, once borned, the lives of ordinary people might be as same as the life of hunchback that even the hunchback has the same emotions like everyone.’ Jin Xing(金星) It’s not too much to say to that the Chinese contemporary dance is wholly indebted to him. The attention to him was initially started from the period of cultural revolution in China. After all, ‘JIN XING DANCE THEATRE’ in Shanghai has been the main influencing place in the progress of Chinese contemporary dance development as the first private modern dance community. 「Half Night Dream」the main portfolio of JIN XING was initially conceived inside of his mind at the moment when he was fully inspired by the beautiful melody of music「Butterfly Lovers The other music「Different Loneliness-不同的孤独, 2014)」’topic of 「Different Loneliness-不同的孤独, 2014)」 is based on the tradition of Mongolian those living on the grass land and incorporates the traditional Chinese styles into contemporary dance, praising the value of ‘The view of Optimism against loneliness’ by completely liberated body languages.
Isadora Duncan Isadora Duncan was borned in San Francisco, 1878 as the youngest among 4. Thanks to her gifted talent, she was convinced by herself and able to get free thinking as a dancer at the early age. The main work of Isadora Duncan「Marseillaise」is dealing with the political situation against invaders. During the performance, she sublimated traditional American styles into her dance as the one of her masterpieces by projecting her ideology ‘Nationalism’ on it. In her another performance ⌜Southern Roses⌟ staged at 1914, she criticizes the Formalism of ballet and shows her thought about liberation. Pina Bausch She was borned in German, 1940 and started her study ‘Classical Ballet & Contemporary Dance’ at the Folkwang School located in Germany. Her education at the Folkwang enabled her become familiar with expressionism style dance. The main topic of , one of her famous work, contains her past thought and impressions, she got during staying at the coffee shop run by her mother when she was a child. The interesting facet of her performance is that she’d been actualizing the world reflected on her inside formed during her childhood as like a director at the theater stage. The that was initially staged at the beginning of 1975, is her praised work as the performance which made huge contribution to the fusion of both Germany Expressionism and American modernism style dance. It was considered to have pioneered a new beginning in the traditional German styles of neo-expressionism, the best of her work abundantly describes the Dynamics, Speed and Tension in the modern dance. As summarized above, I’ve been able to find out the unique traditional factors that has been affecting the contemporary dance style accordingly by selecting the representative dancer of each country and understanding their life and works. As we noticed, in case of South Korea, contemporary dancers tend to take the Korean traditional culture as the source for creating their dance. However, Chinese contemporary dances reveal the trend that is to take the fusional style of both Oriental & Western culture and the unique gestures created by the correlation between the modern dance and the diversified dance styles stemming from the various tribes settled in China. For Germany, since their defeat in 2ndworld war, Germany is now going back to their arousal, pains and the movement toward the Expressionism. Lastly, US seems like that it has been steadily affected by the Germany Expressionism’ dance.
