An intertidal zone is the area between the shoreline at high tide and at low tide. This area is exposed to air during low tide and covered with seawater during high tide, leading to changes in physical properties at the surface once or twice per day. As a result, the supply of energy and water vapor released into the atmosphere from the surface of the intertidal zone changes. Fog is one of the meteorological phenomena caused by tidal effects. In the winter, fog can be strengthened and sustained during high tide. Previous studies related to the land cover of the intertidal zone were primarily observational studies of surface characteristics, such as soil temperature and soil thermal properties. Using this format of observational study, it is possible to identify surface characteristics in the intertidal zone and their effect on the meteorology. However, it is not easy to identify their meteorological impacts on the adjacent inland area. Therefore, numerical meteorological modeling is required to identify meteorological impacts of land cover changes in the area around an intertidal zone. In a meteorological model, the land/sea configuration is fixed for the length of the simulation. In reality, however, as the land cover in the intertidal zone changes throughout the day, the physical properties at the surface change over time. There have been no studies on how the time-varying spatial distribution of the intertidal zone affects horizontal and vertical meteorological changes. The study area is located on the Gyeonggi Bay, which is in the middle of the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. The tidal flats in the Gyeonggi Bay are the largest on the west coast of Korea and account for 42% of the total tidal flats on the west coast. The study cases were summer case (19 Local Standard Time (LST) May 31 to 22 LST June 3, 2016) and fog case (2 LST February 9 to 4 LST February 12, 2015). The time-varying variation of the intertidal zone was produced by verifying and modifying the spatial distribution of the intertidal zone using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) ocean model and Landsat-7 Enhanced Thermatic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data. In this study, the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation cycling system was used in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) meteorological model to hourly update the land cover data initially entered into the input data. The meteorological impacts according to land cover variation were simulated using two experiments of the WRF model: a TIDE experiment with time-varying land cover in the intertidal zone, and a CNTL experiment fixed land cover in the intertidal zone. The coastal wetland occupied approximately 8.7% of the total area during low tide periods in the TIDE experiment, and 8.2% of the total area in the CNTL experiment. Overall, the results of the TIDE experiment were in better agreement with the observations, especially during high tides. In the case of summer case, in the TIDE experiment, during the nighttime high tide (03 LST), the temperature (T) and water vapor mixing ratio (Q) increased (average 0.8 ℃, up to 3.1 ℃, and average 0.7 g kg-1, up to 4.0 g kg-1, respectively) in the intertidal zone. The sea area in the intertidal zone increased, reducing the land breeze range and increasing the influence of the sea surface wind. During the daytime high tide (15 LST), the wind speed (WS) from 80 m to 1.5 km increased due to the strong sea wind. This led to an increase in sea breeze intensity, resulting in meteorological changes in inland areas. However, the WS near the surface decreased because the intertidal zone became as sea, and warm air flows above the cold air on the sea surface, forming a local inversion layer. The sensible heat flux (SHF) became negative (downward exchanging process) in the intertidal zone, resulting in a decrease in T (average 1.3 ℃, up to 7.7 ℃) and an increase in Q (average 0.7 g kg-1, up to 3.5 g kg-1) in the intertidal zone and inland areas. During low tide (21 LST), the T decreased (average 1.5 ℃, up to 4.7 ℃) in the inland area because declining temperatures during the high tide continued in the inland area as the west wind continued. In the case of fog case, the TIDE experiment showed an improvement effect in simulating fog by simulating lower dew-point depression (average 0.2 ℃, up to 0.9 ℃), higher relative humidity (RH) (average 1%, up to 4%), weaker WS (average 0.3 m s-1, up to 1.2 m s-1), and lower visibility (VIS) (average 0.3 km, up to 2.0 km) than the CNTL experiment overall during the fog development period. During the mist period before and after the occurrence of fog due to high tide, the TIDE experiment simulated the movement of sensible heat from the surface to the atmosphere in the intertidal zone and high latent heat flux. As a result, the possibility of simulating fog generation and continuity with the supply of water vapor due to active evaporation increased. The area of fog was compared using three indicators that can be used to confirm the fog simulation: (1) an area with a RH of 90% or more and WS less than 3 m s-1, (2) an area with VIS of less than 1 km, and (3) an area with liquid water content in the lowest layer of the model of 0.015 g kg-1 or higher. As a result, in the TIDE experiment, an improvement effect was obtained in predicting the fog by simulating the fog area similar to the observation.
