This study was conducted to find out the links between the countertransference that novice counselors experience in counseling and their past object relationships, to examine the aspect of countertransference that occurs in counseling and how counselors are aware of it, and to understand the background history of the counselors’ operational theology. 4 novice counselors with less than 5 years of counseling career were interviewed, and the study collected and analyzed the data based on their responses. For data analysis, phenomenological methodology by A. Giorgi was implemented to understand the subjective psychological experiences of participants, and their operational theology was studied by using the pastoral theological approach of M. Jordan. First, to see how the countertransference occurs, in-depth interviews were carried out to focus on the participants’ subjective countertransference and the background of those experiences. After analysis, 61 sentences that convey the key statement of the participants were selected. The sentences were then rearranged by 39 topics and organized under 6 themes. The following 6 themes were found through Giorgi’s data analysis: (1) Little confidence in expertise; while the problem is already common in novice counselors, when the verbal and nonverbal expressions of clients cause anxiety in counselors, it could result in countertransference and reduced confidence in trained theories, affecting their self-awareness of counseling performance. (2) having fear for counseling failure; the stuck identity of incompetent self from one’s past brings cognitive distortion that the counselor will fail in counseling session, and it could lead to a countertransference of self-deprecation and repeated past failure experiences. (3) identification with client and feeling similarity; when the boundaries of client’s and counselor’s problems erode from counselor’s unaware projective identification, they exchange transference and countertransference, and the aim of counseling turns to unresolved problems of the counselor. (4) difficulties in countertransference awareness; it is not common for novice counselors to be aware of countertransference on their own, and the counseling concludes without the client arriving at the essential problem under counselor’s lead. (5) experiencing exhaustion; if a counselor has a conflict in the past that had the similar image, age, sex, or characteristic with the client, it could cause countertransference feelings and psychological exhaustion of the counselor. (6) professional development; countertransference is difficult to face for novice counselors, but the counselor will eventually learn to understand the client as well as oneself through the experience and will achieve professional development. Next, the study took Jordan’s operational theological point of view to seek the hidden idolatry of the participants and examine their twin (double) idolatry to find how they integrate God image. The operational theology from cases were as follows: Common idolatry in participants’ cases were their parents (primary caregivers). Participants had to set aside their archetype growing up and followed the unconscious desires of their messianic caregiver, experiencing the dysfunctional nurture of the caregivers repeated in their relationships or life values as adults. The internalized idolatry connected to the twin (double) idolatry afterward and impacted their individual lives and professional identity as counselor. Participants then were able to integrate God image by receiving counseling training and going through personal life-events, which changed their internalized representation of “God who suppresses and punishes” to “God who embraces and nurtures”.
