The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a hip joint strengthening exercise program and a lumbo-pelvic stabilization exercise program on muscle activity, balance, and function in adults with functional ankle instability. We propose an exercise program that reduces the frequency of re-injury in adults with functional ankle instability and stabilizes ankles to improve pain and function. Thirty adults with functional ankle instability were randomly assigned to the hip joint strengthening and lumbo-pelvic stabilizing groups. Subjects participated in their designated programs 3 times a week for 40 minutes a day at Daegu S Hospital. The hip joint strengthening exercise group underwent general ankle intervention, and the lumbo-pelvic stabilization exercise group had an additional stabilization exercise using a sling. The intervention lasted for 4 weeks, and both groups were instructed to refrain from exercising outside the program during the intervention period. Activity of the tibialis anterior, gluteus maximus, external abdominal oblique, and contralateral latissimus dorsi muscle, balance ability, and foot function were measured. Data were collected from 30 patients. According to the results, posterior-lateral distance and foot and ankle measure scores increased. The average path, velocity, and area 95% of center of pressure significantly decreased, and the ankle instability instrument score decreased. The results suggest that existing lumbo-pelvic stabilization exercises not only help with pain and function of the hip joint, but are also an effective approach for adults with functional ankle instability. Lumbo-pelvic stabilization exercise programs that are tailored to individual characteristics, such as functional level, muscle strength, and duration of ankle injury, reduce the frequency of re-injury and stabilize ankles to improve pain and function.
