Jungmori beats were used in seven of them, recording the highest frequency and being followed by Dongsalpuri and Jungjungmori Jangdan in four, Semachi and Jajinmori Jangdan in three, and Gutgeori and Onmori Jangdan in one in the order.
As for Musical Scale, nine of the 11 new folk songs were performed in Sol Musical Scale with two(Dalmajigase and Ppongttareagase). The c Boncheong Mi Musical Scale was used in the biggest number of Mi Musical Scale songs.
The new folk songs, however, did not tremble in Mi hard like Yukjabaegi and had no grace notes(Daruchi melodies) before twisting ones, taking the typical form of Dangyemyeon.
Of the 11 new folk songs, eight and four were in the Yujeol and Tongjeol form, respectively. Most of them were in the Yujeol form with the melodies progressing the same or similarly in refrains and each verse.
The present study investigated the melodic characteristics of 11 new folk songs in Teaching Materials for Folk Songs by Jeolabuk-do Provincial Institute for Korean Traditional Performing Arts. At a time when there are poor musical research efforts invested in new folk songs, the study will hopefully make even the smallest contribution to the research and education of new folk songs.
