This study fabricated a horizontal two-head machining center intended for productivity improvement, verified the structural stability of its main structural components and core units, and delved into processing optimization. Dynamic characteristics and static stiffness analyses of the machining center were performed to verify the structural stability of its structural components, while dynamic characteristics, static stiffness, and kinetic analyses were done to verify the structural analysis of its core units.
In addition, the study carried out a rotor-dynamics analysis based on bearing and axis designs for fabricating a high-speed air spindle, and presented techniques for preventing thermal deflection and foreign matter infiltration. Dynamic characteristics and static stiffness analyses of a fabricated pilot product were done to review the stability of its main axes. Performance tests of the finished horizontal two-head machining center, as well as relevant processing tests, were done for processing optimization.
The results of the study activities are summarized as follows.
First, the structural stability of the main structural components of the horizontal two-head machining center was verified through dynamic characteristics and static stiffness analyses. In addition, their structural stability against thermal load was assessed and verified through a thermal deflection analysis.
Second, the structural stability of the main components ranging from the spindle to other structural components of the tilting index table, which is the core unit of the machining center, was verified through dynamic characteristics and static stiffness analyses. Additionally, the specifications of the motor and the reducer were verified through a kinetic analysis of the automatic tool replacing device of the machining center.
Third, the stability of the high-speed air spindle was verified through analyses of the bearing and axis design, as well as hazardous speed. In addition, techniques for preventing thermal deflection and foreign matter infiltration were applied. The fabrication of the machining center was verified through the performance tests of a pilot product.
Fourth and last, a performance assessment of the main axis and a flatness analysis of the two-head main axis were carried out for the performance testing of the developed horizontal two-head machining center. For its verification and processing optimization, the performance of the machining center was verified through processing simulations and experiments.
The horizontal two-head machining center developed through this study aims to contribute to minimizing defective ratios and improving the productivity of IT, mobile, and automotive parts manufacturing. In addition, it continues to upgrade the technical competitiveness of the designing of the main structural components and core units of this type of machining center.
