This study examined the controlling factors of the spatial and temporal beach-morphological changes of the Daehangri, Byeonsan, Gosapo and Seonyudo beaches adjacent to the Saemangeum Dike using the EOF analysis method with long-term beach monitoring data sets. The data sets were rescaled by normalizing the geostructural characteristics of the beach morphologies, which explained more than 95% as primary modes in the analysis preventing from getting meaningful statistical results. As results of the EOF analysis, it turned out that the study sites were influenced by three major modes which explained nearly 81% of overall morphological changes. The first mode explained about 65% of the total variability and indicated the mean morphological changes at the study sites. It was expected that the first mode explained the changes of the coastal processes induced by the Saemangeum dyke construction as a regional-scale controlling factor in the study area. The second modes explained about 12% of the morphological changes indicating different local factors such as beach nourishments, small-scaled jetty constructions and seawalls at each study site. The third modes were about 4% of the total variability indicating temporal morphological changes induced by irrigation gate discharge during the summer monsoon season. It is expected, therefore, that the EOF analysis is not only a useful and powerful method for analyzing long-term geomorphologic changes but is also applicable to examining long-term temporal and spatial variabilities of other complex natural phenomena.
