Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Dental Hygienists on Dental Medical Wastes : Mobile Survey Analysis
Jo Eun Byul (Directed by Prof. Park Sang Jun, DDS, MSD, PhD) Department of Health Policy and Management Graduate School of Public Health, Inje University
Objective : This study aimed to identify factors affecting the practice on dental medical wastes for dental hygienists and to present them as basic data for educational programs for the correct practice on dental medical wastes.
Method : Among 236 dental hygienists who agreed to participate in the study, 191 questionnaires were included except for 45 questionnaires answered incorrectly. The mobile survey was used in this study due to Covid 19 pandemic. For the analysis, SPSS 18.0 was used to analyze the general characteristics of the subjects, characteristics related on dental wastes management, environmental awareness, knowledge, attitude and practice on dental wastes. Results : The average environmental consciousness of the subjects was 42.3 points. The average knowledge, attitude and practice on dental medical wastes were 39.8, 78.5 and 69.4 points respectively. The factors affecting the knowledge level on dental medical wastes were education and punishment system. The factors affecting the attitude on dental medical wastes were working hours, number of employees, average number of patients pre day, environmental awareness and guideline, and punishment system. The factors affecting the practice level on dental medical wastes were career, working hours, number of employees, average number of patients per day, and dental medical wastes managers.
Conclusion : The level of knowledge on dental medical wastes by dental hygienists was very low. Factors affecting practice on dental medical wastes were dental hygienists' career and dental medical wastes personnel. Therefore, it is necessary to develop standardized guidelines for dental medical wastes suitable for dental characteristics and provide opportunities for continuous education. It is suggested to improve the level of practice on dental medical wastes by designating dental hygienists with many educational experience and dental work experience as dental medical wastes personnel.
