In Korea, small businesses are beleaguered by a decline in areas of traditional businesses, growing competition among the same types of businesses, a rise in costs of raw materials, minimum wage, rent, as well as forays of large corporations into back alleys formerly occupied by small businesses. Many small businesses are at the crossroads of survival or demise. Efforts are needed to support them, and one of the viable solutions is to develop O2O(online to offline) platform service. It incorporates a variety of technologies ranging from online shopping malls to simple payment, promotional marketing, and community building, and as such, it can help maximize competitiveness of small businesses in marketplace. According to SERI, the volume of O2O market in Korea is over 300 trillion won annually, and a business that pioneers O2O market first would be the leader of the future. O2O business has become an irreversible trend for small businesses, as well as for large corporations and SMEs. Against this background, this study aims to analyze factors that influence small business owners’ intention to accommodate O2O platform service. For this purpose, a survey was conducted for 279 small business owners, and the results were statistically analyzed on a cloud automation site for social science. Previous research was examined to investigate the concepts of the variables and research outcomes. Considering that small businesses are organizations but tend to have individualistic characteristics, independent variables were set as perceived usefulness, perceived ease-of-use, subjective criteria at an individual level; at an organizational level, technological factors included suitability, relative advantage, and possibility of attempt regarding diffusion of innovation; psychological factors of management included risk-taking inclination and innovativeness; capacity characteristics of management included business experience, management capacity, IT knowledge and capacity; and external environment-related factors included government support, changing digital environment, and pressure from competitors. Then, a research model was constructed to test that these organization-level factors affected perceived usefulness, perceived ease-of-use, and subjective criteria at an individual level. This model was empirically analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis using SEM. The research findings are as follows. First, the survey respondents indicated that perceived usefulness, perceived ease-of-use and subjective criteria―that is, individual-level factors relating to technological acceptance―positively affected their intention to adopt O2O platform service; perceived ease-of-use had a significant influence on perceived usefulness. Second, suitability, relative advantage, and possibility of attempt regarding diffusion of innovation positively affected the respondents’ perceived usefulness; variables for external environmental factors―government support, changing digital environment, and pressure from competitors―had a significant impact on the respondents’ subjective criteria. Third, at an organizational level, management’s risk-taking inclination had a significant influence on perceived usefulness, but innovativeness did not; management’s experience, management capacity, IT knowledge and capacity did not have a significant influence on perceived usefulness; but, IT knowledge and capacity positively affected perceived ease-of-use. This study is a first that applied organizational-level variables to an individual-level model in investigating small business owners’ intention to accommodate new technology, and conducted multi-dimensional research that combined theories of technology acceptance at both organizational and individual levels, in consideration of characteristics of small businesses that have both organizational and individual qualities. While a majority of previous research were conducted from a consumer perspective regarding O2O service, this study provided theoretical grounds on the factors that affected acceptance of O2O platform service by small business owners as a service supplier. As such, it is expected to add diversity to research on O2O platform service and promote use of the new service by providing preliminary data for small businesses that want to accommodate a newly rising business model of O2O platform service and also for policy development by government organizations.
