A Study on the visual effects of interior green wall through virtual reality (VR)원문보기

It is essential to create a healthy indoor environment as human indoor occupancy increases significantly due to global industrialization, and recently COVID-19. In order to create a healthy indoor environment, natural elements such as plants are receiving much attention, and efficient methods in achieving this are indoor green wall. Since most of the studies analyzing the effects of indoor green wall remain in qualitative assessment through surveys or analyze environmental effects rather than visual effects, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the reactions of the occupants to the visual effects of indoor green wall qualitatively and quantitatively by supplementing these limitations. For the experiment of this study, four virtual experimental environments were implemented (the basic environment of 0m2 , the environment with one movable green wall of 2m2 , the environment with two movable green walls of 4m2 , and the environment with an entire fixed green wall of 8m2 of green space) were implemented. A total of 27 subjects were recruited to experience each of the four virtual environments in a random order in a room where external conditions were controlled, and the subjects' psychological satisfaction, task performance and task load, and physiological responses (heart rate, electrodermal activity, skin temperature, and brain wave) were measured and the indicators were calculated. The results of this study are as follows. First, the psychological satisfaction and task performance in the environment in which one or two movable green walls were installed were higher than in the environment in which the entire fixed green wall was installed, and there were no statistically significant differences in the number of installations of mobile green wall. Second, the statistical analysis of biometric indicators showing the level of stress resulted from measured physiological satisfaction showed less stress and more stable psychological state in the environment with one and two movable green wall than in the basic environment, and increased stress in an environment with entire fixed green wall. Overall, the psychological and physiological effects of indoor green wall have influenced the presence and effect of greening, not the area of greening, and the effect has been reduced when the green covers one whole wall. These results can be used to refer to area or type of indoor green wall that take into account both psychological and physiological satisfaction and economic aspects, and virtual reality implemented as a green wall environment can be proposed as a way to reduce stress.
