Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) require large amounts of precious metal catalysts for slow oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) at the cathodic electrode and high over voltages. On the other hand, the alkaline membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) have an advantage that it is not necessary to use a precious metal catalyst such as Pt due to fast ORR. Nevertheless, the commercialization of AEMFC has been delayed due to the absence of chemical resistance and high-performance anion exchange membranes. Therefore, studies for an anion exchange membrane (AEM) having excellent chemical resistance and mechanical strength under alkaline conditions is required. In this study, Three types of Ni (0) catalysts were used to select an optimal catalyst capable of synthesizing a high molecular weight polymer through various model reactions. And the stoichiometry for synthesis was optimized by adjusting the amount and type of ligand used to activate the Ni(0) catalyst. The resulting AEM showed relatively lower water uptake with higher ion conductivity than commercial Fumatech membrane in DIW at 25 ℃. In addition, long-term chemical stability tests under strong alkaline conditions have suggested that AEMs with phenylene structure have better chemical stability than PAES membranes and has the potential as a alternative commercial membranes.
