Art museums hold a central status in urban spaces, playing a significant role as tourism resources, and for urban vitalization transcending regions and places. In modern art museums, Renzo Piano is evaluated as an architect, who created an optimal environment that takes into consideration placeness and works of art. In comparison to his international profile, however, related research at home and abroad are extremely scarce. Thus, this study began with the judgment that Renzo Piano’s works are worth in-depth study. The aim of this study is to consider art museums deigned by Renzo Piano in terms of what methods of contextual connection with place are adopted and how multifaceted place characteristics are reflected in space in order to determine the unique meaning of multifaceted placeness and spatial design characteristics in his art museum design. To this end, the design concepts of Renzo Piano were deduced by reviewing the characteristics of architects who had direct and indirect influence on him. Renzo Piano produces enormous column-free space and constructs architectural forms connected with the context. This approach embodies abstract and figurative places. The art museums he designed connect the context with the place by connecting the street context and organizing space around a piazza. Thus, an art museum forming a relationship through interactions with the place embodies a figurative place. For each type of art museum he designed, this study specifically analyzed the space arrangement around the urban context, the architectural form reflecting the place, and the exhibition spaces interconnected with the surrounding environment. As a result, it was found that the art museums he designed show the characteristics of multifaceted places where abstraction and figuration coexist. An artificial new place in a city is first constructed by installing a roof, which is a huge plate, and the huge roof and pillars form an abstract place creating a column-free horizontal space. Organizing space around the horizontal axis connected to the place axis, spaces are arranged by connecting the surrounding streets. Thus, streets and walkways are constructed inside and outside. As access paths between respective spaces, the streets generate pedestrian movement and continuously maintain the flow of space through connecting places. In addition, the piazza forms a central space as the central point of all spaces and embodies a figurative place where interactions between people, places, and spaces and various events may take place. The exhibition spaces simultaneously generate abstract and figurative places. The exhibition space constructed as a column-free space and the places where only art works can be viewed due to fake walls form abstract places. The all-glass facade and loggia spaces, which allow continuous recognition of their connection with place render visual experience of the passage of time and the surrounding environment to embody a figurative place. The characteristics of art museum design by Renzo Piano based on multifaceted placeness are as follows. First, the formation of an urban art space through the place context involves the construction of place by installing a huge plate on the site. This is a method of assuming and approaching an art museum as a piazza. A huge plate forms a central point of the place as a continuation of the urban structure constructing the area of the roof in general. Variation and diversification of spatial experiences through connection with the place compose an open central space and create a spatial device for the relationship with the landscape. Piano established a unique design method that produce maximized spatial experience through the connection of art and place experience. It can be said that he designs a city within a city while building an art museum, a place for people. It can also be said that the device that induces movement generates an unexpected sequence of places during spatial experience, allow people to discover new perspectives and meanings for an art museum, and forms placeness. Through art museums, Piano forms a new city within a city by connecting people, spaces, and places, and builds up layers of time that contain the history and stories of people, spaces, and places. In other words, the harmony between spaces within an art museum and changing places forms a unique identity of art museum that builds new places through the relationship between people, places, and spaces. In addition, the ultimate purpose of his unique art museum design is a space for people and art, and the integration of art, architecture, and place. The exhibition spaces that induce art experience connected to place and light forming the atmosphere of space, in particular, is a unique quality only found in art museums Piano designed. This suggests the direction art museums should take today and in the future. It is expected that the characteristics of Renzo Piano’s art museums theoretically established in this study provide useful data to future researchers and used as basic data for suggesting direction in future spatial planning of art museums in Korea.
