Polymer dispersed liquid crystal display (PDLCD) is called as a smart window and could be used for windows of buildings or cars, advertising boards, and the separation plate of interior spaces. PDLCD was prepared by inserting the mixture of liquid crystal (LC) and polymer precursor, which was made by mixing monomer and oligomer between two ITO coated PET films working as electrodes, and completed by curing the device under UV irradiation. In this study, we investigated the effect of variation in the properties of polymer precursors on the electro-optical properties of PDLCD. The electro-optical properties of the PDLCD was characterized by measuring haze, transmittance and contrast ratio. The relationship between the electro-optical properties and the composition of the PDLCD precursor was investigated by comparing the size of the liquid crystal droplet and the thickness of the polymer matrix. The longer the chain length of the monomer, the larger the size of the liquid crystal droplet and the thicker the polymer matrix, the lower the threshold voltage and the higher the transmittance. In addition, when the compatibility between the polymer precursor and LC increases, the size of the LC droplets gets smaller and the thickness of the polymer matrix gets thinner, resulting in the high threshold voltage and low transmittance. It might be caused by the difficulties of moving of LC in the PDLCD. The results in this study indicates that the control of the LC size in the PDLCD is highly important in fabricating the high performance PDLCD.
