In spite of lithium metal`s unequalled theoretical capacity, usage of lithium metals as an anode material has faced with critical obstacles such as indiscriminate dendrite growth due to uneven electrodeposition of lithium and the continuous electrolyte decomposition originated from parasitic surface reaction. A number of approaches have been proposed to make up for this inherent drawback of lithium metal. Of various approaches, two approaches, stabilization of the lithium metalelectrolyte interface via electrolyte additive or polymer coating on the surface of lithium metal and uniform distribution of lithium ions on the surface of lithium metal via modifying pore channel structure of separator, have been recently spotlighted as promising approaches for effective suppression of fatal dendrite growth. In this regard, it might be expected that the synergistic effect for efficiently prohibiting lithium metal dendrite growth would be acquired by combination of two pioneering techniques. Herein, we report a track-etched polyimide separator with straight pore channel structure integrated with polyviylpyrrolidone (PVP) which enables generation of the stable protective layer on the surface of lithium metal. The track-etched PI separator integrated with PVP can create an artificial stable SEI layer dominantly consisting of Li3N on the surface of lithium metal by the reaction between PVP and lithium metal and provide uniform lithium ion flux through its straight pore channel structure, thereby effectively suppressing the lithium metal dendrite formation and growth over battery cycling. Consequently, the PVP-incorporated track-etched PI separator shows a significantly improved cyclability in full-cells paired with NCM622. Suggesting that the formation of artificial stable SEI layer enabled by the PVP incorporated on the track-etched PI separator can be useful concept for developing lithium metal batteries (LMBs)
