This research examines how task complexity and collaborative work affect the writing performance of Korean elementary EFL students. The aim of this research is to find effective ways of teaching English writing to Korean elementary EFL learners. Task complexity was manipulated by using cognitive factor. As for collaborative work, half of the participants were required to do English writing task in groups and the others work individually. Then the products written by the participants were analyzed based on three criteria named complexity, accuracy, and fluency. Along with it, the types and patterns of interactions between the participants during the collaborative writing task were observed in the form of Language Related Episode. This research was carried out on total 70 Korean elementary school students of the 6th grade. Prior to the experiment, the researcher gave all the participants pre-writing test to verify the homogeneity of the group. Then, the participants were classified into four groups: Simple individual(SI), Complex individual(CI), Simple collaborative(SC), and Complex collaborative(CC). In the experiment, each group did narrative writing task where they were required to make a story by looking at five pictures in the four different conditions. Task complexity was manipulated by making causal reasoning demand, referring to one of cognitive factors that Robinson(2007) insisted. In other words, task complexity was decided by whether the story presented its ending. Also, participants were divided into collaborative work group and individual work group. During the task, collaborative groups were allowed to discuss to write stories. Data was analyzed by doing both quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative research was conducted in analyzing written products based on complexity, accuracy, and fluency. Qualitative research was carried out in observing participants' conversation made during collaborative work, which is called Language Related Episode(LRE). The types of LRE were classified into form-focused LRE and meaning-focused LRE. Also, following Storch(2002)'s research, the patterns of interaction between participants were labeled as collaborative, dominant/dominant, dominant/passive, and expert/novice. The research found that as a task becomes more complex, the complexity and fluency of written products improved. In accuracy, however, there were no meaning differences among groups. It was notable that doing the complex task by working collaboratively had a positive impact on students' writing performance. Also, during collaborative work, participants had more interactions in the form of meaning-focused LREs than form-focused LREs. And CC group mainly showed the dominant/dominant and the dominant/passive patterns of interaction, whereas SC group generally showed the collaborative and the expert/novice patterns. Theses findings suggest that it is desirable for English teachers to teach writing to Korean elementary EFL students by giving them complex task and allowing them to work collaboratively, so that the students should be encouraged to have more interactions. This way, teachers would help students improve their English writing performance more effectively.
