The purpose of this study is to select neologism for Korean language and culture education, then to categorize the new words by subject and develop a teaching and learning model and utilize it in actual education fields using newspapers for language and culture integrated education. The study aims to suggest a list of the new words and the cultural characteristics as basic materials for modern cultural education in Korea. In a bid to achieve this goal, this study arranged the standard of selecting vocabulary for education by analyzing neologism included in The Neologism Report published by the National Institute of Korean Language and classified the vocabulary according to the standard. Moreover, based on the selected neologism for education, this study examined the problems of the existing measures of teaching and learning neologism using newspapers and sought a strategy which tries to find teaching and learning measures that can become alternatives.
In chapter 1, the purpose, necessity and subject of the study are defined. The advanced study is reviewed to organize the trend of studies. Through theses, the educational value of neologism in Korean language and culture education and the necessity of selecting neologism was verified. It revealed it will select neologism for Korean and culture education, categorize the list of neologism by subjects and confirm to examine the cultural characteristics in Korean modern culture through keyword of neologism.
In Chapter 2, before full-fledged research, the theoretical background was outlined. It established the concept, scope of neologism through previous studies. With regard to the scope of neologism, it set the extent to which the new word is through reviewing the relationship between the new word and the adjacent vocabulary concepts.
In Chapter 3, a total of five criteria for selecting new words was prepared, referring to the criteria for selecting neologism set in the preceding study. In addition, methods and procedures for selecting new words were presented. Based on the standard, neologism database published from 2015 to 2019 by National Institute of the Korean Language as basic material, the study investigated neologism by using Google Search and naver Search to investigate the current use, frequency, and persistence of the neologism. Also, after classifying by its frequency and persistency, it selected final neologism vocabulary lists by considering whether they are currently listed in the dictionary and educational suitability. Then selected a list of subjects for cultural education and classified the new words by subject.
In Chapter 4, suggested the teaching and learning strategy and methods which can be utilized in actual lessons.
In chapter 5, the result of discussion was summarized and settled the meanings and limitations of the study. The significance of this study can be settled by classifying neologism by subjects, it provided fundamental data to enable efficient utilization of neologism for developing Korean language and cultural education material and actual teaching. However, as it subjects conducted verification on actual field of education, there are limits to the study conclusion. It is hoped that future research will be conducted to verify the practical use of the new language in cultural education through Korean language teachers.
