Mobile communications refers to a technology that can transmit and receive voice and data services through radio waves without physical restrictions. Currently, 4G service and an early version of 5G are being serviced in the frequency band below 6 GHz. 5G mobile communications is characterized by ultra-high speed, low latency, and massive connectivity, and it is expanding to various fields related to the 4th industrial revolution, such as the Internet of Things, virtual reality applications, and machine to machine communication, in addition to the existing voice and data services. There are currently 1.5 billion cellular Internet of Things connected devices worldwide and is expected to reach 4.1 billion by 2024. High channel capacity must be ensured to accommodate all of these devices. However, it is difficult to secure additional frequency bands as the frequency bands below 6 GHz where 4G and 5G mobile communications are currently operated are saturated. In order to solve this problem, millimeter-wave communication technology that can secure a wideband frequency is drawing attention as a major key technology for 5G. The short-wavelength of millimeter-wave signals allows to reduce the antenna spacing, and enables miniaturization of hardware, making it easy to implement massive MIMO. However, problems such as high hardware cost, power consumption, and insufficient installation space are caused for millimeter-wave systems in which massive antennas are mounted in access units. In order to solve these problems, hybrid beamforming and antenna selection schemes are mainly discussed. When a dense small cell networks are deployed in 5G millimeter wave communications, additional indirect handovers or direct handovers may occur frequently due to the mobility of the mobile units or obstacles preventing directional communication. When an optimal radio frequency (RF) beam suitable for a channel is selected from among hundreds or thousands of training beams in the analog beamforming step of hybrid beamforming, such handover may cause a problem of deteriorating system performance due to a high delay time. The antenna selection scheme aims to obtain high system performance while reducing the number of RF chains by selecting and using only the optimal antenna instead of using full antennas installed in the base station. In order to select the optimal antenna, exhaustive search method and greedy search method are mainly studied, but the computational complexity is greatly increased in proportion to the number of antennas. Also, when the scale of problems such as the number of transceivers increases, the existing antenna selection algorithms cannot be practiced due to high computational complexity. In this paper, deep learning-based antenna selection and hybrid beamforming systems are proposed to maximize spectral efficiency and to mitigate computational complexity and hardware cost for 5G millimeter-wave communications. First, a deep learning-based hybrid beamforming (DL-HBF) system consisting of a serving cell prediction model and an RF beam prediction model is proposed. A deep neural network capable of classifying multi-classes is used for optimal serving cell and optimal RF beam prediction. Second, a deep learning-based antenna selection and digital beamforming (DL-ASDBF) composed of an optimal serving cell prediction model and an antenna prediction model is proposed. A method of reducing the number of antenna combinations by dividing antennas into groups based on antenna channel gain for DL-ASDBF is proposed. Finally, a deep learning-based antenna selection and hybrid beamforming system composed of prediction models that can predict the serving cell, the optimal antenna, and the RF beam is proposed by integrating DL-HBF and DL-ASDBF. To verify the proposed schemes, this paper analyzes the spectral efficiency based on the channel and evaluates the system performance and complexity. Also, to verify the proposed schemes in a more detailed and practical system environments including cell network configuration, new radio transmission frame, resource scheduling, and practical channel model, the system-level simulator is designed based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project standard.
