The Ministry of Education has announced Talent for the future society in the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. It has shifted the educational paradigm in order to raise talents with knowledge on Humanities · Social Studies · Science and Technology and creativity-convergence that consists of humanistic imagination and scientific · technical creativity. Art is an important subject that allows to acquire the right attitude through visual images as a means of expressing one’s feelings and thoughts and communicating visually. Therefore, art is a key subject in order for raising the talent with creativity-convergence of attitude and cultural knowledge.
Encountering eclectic changes, the world including Korea has faced a huge risk since December 2019 due to the COVID-19 situations. This pandemic has brought a significant change in student’s education because the class in-person has a risk in the spread of the virus. As the education gap continues in long term, the school started to adopt remote teaching. However, the art subject has insufficient contents and teaching · learning methods for remote teaching, unlike other subjects.
The area where it needs memorization such as art history and understanding the concept of art can be conducted in remote teaching but it is hard to have a class on learning skills for each art tool and instructing creative activities. Thus, it is essential to find a new teaching · learning methods from the existing one in order to achieve effective remote teaching.
The purpose of the paper is to suggest teaching · learning methods for middle school art courses based on ‘blended learning’ which utilizes both offline and online classes in balance with an art educational instruction of the new era.
In Chapter 1, it explains the background, purpose, and implication of the research. Chapter 2 introduces the concept and characteristics of e-learning and blended learning and the theoretical background of the educational effects of blended learning. Also, it narrates the purpose, context, and achievement standard of the middle school art course in the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. Chapter 3 suggests the learning model of blended learning and the considerations on using an applicable model of teaching and learning methods for blended learning in three areas of ‘experience’, ‘expression’, and ‘thoughts’ based on middle school art textbook. The class is designed with lessons that can systematically connect the offline and online class by using the teaching tools such online platforms as Zoom, Google Form, Live Worksheets, and Padlet. Lastly, Chapter 4 summarizes the thesis and concludes the research with limitations.
Unlike other subjects, art’s blended learning has not been researched actively. The following thesis will provide an opportunity to develop art education by suggesting and researching future teaching methods for middle school art courses based on blended learning.
