Recently, research on indoor location recognition technology using smartphones has been actively carried out due to the expansion of location-based services and the increase in the supply of personal devices. Depending on the type of data collected, indoor location recognition is possible with technologies such as fingerprinting, triangulation, and pedestrian dead reckoning. Fingerprinting using wireless signals and indoor position recognition technologies based on trilateral measurements has been continuously studied since the 2000s, reducing the error rate for location measurement to within 10%. However, the infrastructure for transmitting and receiving wireless signals is essential and heavily influenced by the measurement environment. Pedestrian dead reckoning uses acceleration and magnetometer sensors to calculate the distance and direction of movement of pedestrians to estimate their location. Pedestrian dead reckoning can address the disadvantages of fingerprinting and trilateral measurements, but the positioning performance varies significantly depending on the model or formula that converts sensor data into the distance and heading direction. In addition, it is difficult to generalize models or formulas for position estimation because pedestrians have different walking habits or patterns. This paper proposes a pedestrian dead reckoning system utilizing deep learning techniques to solve the problem of pedestrian dead reckoning. The proposed system is actually designed to be available on smartphones. The proposed system had an error rate of approximately 4% based on data collected indoors to estimate the actual path.
