A steel pipe scaffold is a temporary structure that is widely used in construction sites across South Korea. These scaffolds are frequently installed and dismantled for constructing each target structure. There are certain structural safety specifications for the installation spacing of the wall connections and cross bracing for a steel pipe scaffold. However, the construction sequence of each member during the installation of the scaffolds has not been considered. Furthermore, the general structural calculation for complete scaffold structures under batch loading conditions cannot ensure a reasonable safety examination because each scaffold is temporarily used in construction sites throughout its life cycle. To address these aspects, a construction stage analysis was performed in this study to investigate the construction sequence of a steel pipe scaffold. The analysis was aimed at accurately identifying the structural behavior of the scaffold during its construction stage. In particular, the behavior of eight models was comparatively analyzed in terms of the difference in the time required for installing the wall connection and the cross bracing, which is an actual site condition that is determined by the scaffold workmen’s experience and convenience. We also clarified the necessity of such a construction stage analysis. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: (i) In the case of the general analysis model, the combined stress ratio of the target steel pipe scaffold was found to be 0.922. In other words, the design of the member was approximately 92 % compared to the permissible stress. The combined stress ratio in the last stage of the construction stage analysis model was 1.311, which is 42.2 % higher than that determined by the general analysis model. (ii) The construction stage analysis of the wall connection and the cross bracing performed by considering the construction stage conditions showed that the combined stress ratio exceeded 1.000 at every stage when the wall connection was installed first. This implies that unless the wall connection is installed at an appropriate time during construction, the lateral drift of the steel pipe scaffold cannot be effectively controlled and can lead to fatal consequences due to its poor structural safety. By contrast, the installation time of the cross bracing was determined to have minor impact on the combined stress ratio at each construction stage. (iii) Similar to the practice of installing work plates on the joists of the steel pipe scaffolds in construction sites, this study also applied loads to joists. This resulted in a bending stress of 224.7 N/mm2, exceeding the permissible flexural tensile stress. In other words, the bending stress exceeded the permissible value of 140 N/mm2 specified by the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code.
