Climate change causes environmental stress to plants, which affect crop productivity. The response of pepper (Capsicum annuum) was monitored under various environmental stress conditions using a plant electrical signal (PES) sensor that reflects water and ion transport in plants. While pepper was exposed to environmental stress conditions, plant biometric information (PES, sap flow rate, leaf temperature), climatic (temperature(T), relative humidity(RH), CO2, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD)) and soil (temperature, water content, electrical conductivity, water potential) conditions were monitored. The chlorophyll content, proline content and chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), which were commonly used to measure the stress response of plants, were also analyzed. Experiments were conducted in a growth chamber using potted peppers. For normal growth conditions, 25/20℃ (day/night), 60% RH, 400 µL/L CO2, 16 hour photoperiod, and 100–200 µmol/m2/s PPFD were set as a control. Low temperature (LT) condition was 18/13℃ (day/night), and high temperature (HT) condition was 38/33℃ (day/night). Low RH condition of 30%, high RH condition of 90%, and high CO2 conditions of 800 µL/L and 1,100 µL/L were set and the low PPFD was set at 80 µmol/m2/s and 60 µmol/m2/s. In addition, the soil was sequentially treated with 20 mmol/kg and 40 mmol/kg NaCl for salinity treatment. In the case of control, during the day when PPFD and T are high, plants absorb water and ions, increasing PES and sap flow rates while they decreased at night. When the plant is stressed, the patterns of PES and sap flow rates are out of the normal range. The PES and sap flow rate decreased in the LT condition, but increased in the HT condition. There was no significant change in PES and sap flow rate under the conditions of RH, CO2 and PPFD change, but increased under salinity condition. Chlorophyll content tended to decrease under stress conditions. However, it seemed not to be sensitive to changes in environmental conditions. Proline content increased under stress conditions as a defense mechanism against environmental stress, and increased under conditions of LT, low RH, CO2 1,100 µL/L, PPFD 60 µmol/m2/s and salinity conditions. Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) measures the photosynthetic efficiency of leaves and tends to decrease under stress conditions, such as T change, low RH, CO2 and PPFD change. As a result, it is judged that pepper was most stressed under the conditions of LT and salinity conditions. Correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and regression analysis showed that PES well represents the stress response of pepper, and can be applied to create optimal environmental conditions for plants in smart farms in parallel with environmental sensors.
