This study experimentally proves that the biodiesel (BD) derived from swine manure (SM) could be a promising valorizing way for SM disposal. To this end, the economic and environmental benefits from SM BD were judged. To establish the virtuous cycle from SM disposal, viability of SM biochar in thermally-induced transesterification of lipid was also investigated. Acid catalyzed transesterification of crude lipid (using H2SO4) from the dried SM sample exhibited the low BD yield (14.2 wt.%) due to the low tolerance against impurities (i.e., free fatty acids (FFAs), water, and unknown organic compounds). However, thermally-induced transesterification of SM lipid in the presence of a porous material (SiO2) showed the yield of 94.7 wt.%. In light of the total number of swine in Korea, the annual production of BD from SM was also estimated in this study. Possible BD production from swine could cover 19.7 and 46.8 wt.% of BD currently produced in both Korea and the USA with the economic benefits of up to $96 million and $2.1 billion, respectively. The proposed BD production from SM can also save vast arable lands needed to cultivate oil-bearing feedstocks for BD production. Biochar derived from SM was also used as a porous material in BD production. Pyrolysis of SM was done to obtain swine manure biochars (SMBs) at 500 (SMB@500) and 650 ˚C (SMB@650), and these were employed for conversion of waste cooking oil (WCO) into BD (fatty acid methyl esters: FAMEs). SMBs included a large quantity of metallic contents that significantly expedited the reaction kinetics of thermally-induced transesterification. SMB@500 and SMB@650 showed higher than 96% of FAME yield at 305 and 210 ˚C, while thermally-induced reaction using SiO2 showed similar FAME yield at 330 ˚C. In conclusion, this work suggested the more sustainable measures enabling to recycle organic and inorganic materials in livestock manures for energy (BD, pyrolytic oil, H2, and C1-2 HCs) production.
