Phase change material (PCM) is the latent heat, heat storage, or heat storage that can absorb or release a lot of heat when the phase (shape) changes from solid to liquid, liquid to gas, or in the opposite direction without a change in temperature at a specific temperature. PCM is free in shape and is not disturbed by the influence of the storage location during the heat storage, and the latent heat plays an important role in energy storage during the phase change. Compared to sensible heat, the latent heat is tens to hundreds of times the energy at the phase change temperature. It shows the advantage of having superior functions compared to existing energy-saving materials using sensible heat because it has storage and emission capacity. In this study, an eco-friendly snow removal system was implemented using a thermal storage tank that used reduced existing concrete slab and PCM. Besides, we performed to find out how to utilize it by verifying its performance. PCM is used as 'Octadecanol' (Melting point: 58°C), which can be used efficiently in 50°C or higher, and the temperature range for use of thermal energy is between 50°C to 70°C. Road snow removal system temperature setting range is -15℃ to 2℃ for surface temperature, 50~70℃ for PCM tank temperature (operation temperature), 40~55℃ for antifreeze temperature (inlet to outlet, heat dissipation), and 50~70℃ for antifreeze temperature (inlet to outlet), outer/inner was set to 650~410μm. Furthermore, for the optimal design of the PCM heat storage tank used in the study, it was designed in consideration of various conditions such as road snow removal area, road surface snow amount, and domestic standard pavement surface temperature. The area of ??the concrete pavement is 0.04㎡ (0.8 m × 0.5 m) with a thickness of 30 mm, the surface temperature of the pavement is -15℃, and the properties for heating the pavement were considered as specific heat of 0.8988 kJ/kg·K, and unit weight of 24.0 kN/㎥. All the snowfall assumed in the experiment was melted, and the amount of heat of PCM required to maintain the surface temperature of the package having a thickness of 150 mm at an average of 2°C was derived. Besides, the heat storage tank performance test was conducted. The heat energy was stored by applying a boiler instead of solar heat, which is a heat transfer medium, and a thermometer was installed in a uniform location inside the heat storage tank to monitor the temperature distribution inside the heat storage tank in real-time. Lastly, a concrete pavement body for application to the road was produced. Pipes were installed for heat transfer to the concrete pavement, and a commercial solar heat collector was used as a heat energy transfer medium for heat storage. In the experiment of the road snow removal system, from the point where the surface temperature of the pavement was -15℃, the antifreeze began to radiate at a flow rate of 7 L/min, and the surface temperature of the pavement increases accordingly. From the starting point to about 25 min, the surface temperature of the package body increased singnificantly to reach 1℃, and the average temperature increased smoothly as the ice sheet formed on the surface was thawed. After 120 min of heat dissipation started, it was confirmed that the ice sheet on the surface of the package was completely melted, and the average temperature of the surface of the package was maintained at around 10°C.
