Recently, due to the depletion of chemical fuel, research on energy production technologies such as wind power, intelligent power, thermal power, and solar power has been actively conducted. However, due to problems such as natural disasters and environmental variables, there is a limit to the continuous production of energy, so research in the energy storage field is required. Lithium-ion batteries are attracting attention as the energy storage system of the future for electric vehicles. In order to improve battery performance, the development of separators, which are major components of lithium-ion batteries, is becoming important. Characteristics such as 1) porosity, 2) mechanical strength, and 3) electrolyte absorption of the separator are important factors for the transfer of lithium ions for electricity generation and the stability and performance of the battery. The mechanical and chemical properties of the electrospun nanofiber membrane provide advantages such as porosity and electrolyte absorption as a battery separator but have the disadvantage of having a lower mechanical strength than a film-type separator. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which can be used as a separator, has a structure in which the CH₂-CF₂ structure is repeated, and the crystal phase changes, such as α, β, and γ depending on the treatment method. Among the various phases, the β phase, which has a trans-gauche-trans-gauche' (TGTG') structure, has strong mechanical strength and has a high piezoelectric effect due to its polar structure. In many papers, efforts are made to increase the β phase through heat treatment, stretching, and electrical extrusion to obtain the PVDF β phase. Therefore, in this paper, a study was carried out to fabricate an electrospun PVDF lithium-ion battery separator with a high β phase. Heat is applied as a post-treatment to increase the β phase of a general film-type PVDF membrane, but in the case of nanofiber membranes, due to the characteristics of nano- and micro-sized fiber diameters and porosity, the fibers are melted or twisted during high-temperature heat treatment, which presented some difficulties. Therefore, a new concept of melt electrospinning, in which high-temperature is photothermally applied to the electrospinning fiber using a near-infrared (NIR) wavelength lamp was used to produce a PVDF nanofiber separator rich in the β phase. To solve the problem of PVDF curing at low temperatures, the syringe containing the solution was heated using heated oil to increase the electrospinning efficiency. The mechanical and chemical changes due to the increase in the β phase were evaluated, and the lithium-ion battery coin cell was fabricated to confirm its performance as a battery. In the future, the near-infrared (NIR) based photothermal electrospinning method, which is a new concept of melt electrospinning that can obtain heat-treated fibers without damaging the fibers and twisting the membrane, is expected to be used in various ways. In addition, the rich β phase of the photothermal-treated PVDF nanofiber membrane has an advantage as a separator for lithium-ion batteries, and has been confirmed as a new platform to increase the efficiency of the energy storage system in the future.
