Lithium (Li), the lightest and most electronegative metallic element, demonstrates a high specific capacity (3860 mAh g−1) and a low electrochemical potential (−3.04 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode), thus being an ideal anode material for high-energy Li-metal batteries. However, the realization of such batteries is currently impeded by the serious safety hazards (e.g., electrical short-circuiting) due to the uncontrollable dendritic growth and significant volume expansion of Li during Li plating and stripping. Although various solid electrolyte interface (SEI) and functional protective layer designs have been explored to regulate Li growth behavior and thus enable the implementation of Li-metal anodes, the mechanism of Li dendrite growth remains underexplored from an electrochemical point of view. Considering the critical role of artificial SEIs, we herein use the finite element method to clarify the origin and growth mechanism of Li dendrites, demonstrating that dendrite growth is mainly due to the low ionic conductivity of the SEI layer and can be suppressed using a high-ionic-conductivity artificial SEI. Analyses of current density, exchange current density, and geometry reveal that an artificial SEI is crucial for the regulation of local current distributions and that it directly affects Li dendrite growth. The obtained insights are expected to facilitate the design of artificial SEIs for securing the stable cycling performance of Li-metal anodes in advanced Li-metal batteries.
