The main purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of developing a new criticism theory using the theory of social science for culture. To this end, I chose the meme theory that explains the propagation and deformation of cultural elements, among the various theories of social science. In meme theory, each individual element of culture is replicated and propagated based on the imitative ability of the human brain. Whereas the other evolution social sciences try to explain human behavior around biological heredity, meme theory is suitable to explain the transformation and propagation of culture. In addition, the fundamental behavioral factors and direct influences of human behaviors are discovered by unifying the evolution social science and meme theory. These characteristics of meme theory go beyond the confirmation of the psychological origins of the characters in a play, making it possible to understand how cultural elements are transformed and propagated. In this thesis, three specific measures were proposed on how to interpret the literary works of meme theory. First, understanding the inherent motives behind the character's behaviors at a play, through charaters’ selfplex which means a pack of memes. Second, regarding the individual cultural elements in the work as mems and understanding how they interact with each other to identify their contribution to the plot. Third, comprehending the background of the work by checking how the memes outside are transmitted into the work through the writer. In the body, the proposed literary theory of memes is adopted to analyze Peter Sheffer's 『The Gift of the Gogon』 and find out it can be function as a new criticism actually. Firstly, we analyzed the three letters exchanged between Edward and Helen to see which memes were composed of. Because they wrote play-type letters by bringing their egos in Perseus and Athena, exploring the letters reveals that their egos consist of memes based on feelings of revenge and forgiveness. Next, Helen's obsession with Edward is reviewed to determine the point of where memes lead human behavior to confront with genetic gain. Later, the process of social propagation of three plays written by Edward is confirmed from the perspective of meme propagation. Finally, the disease model of revenge is reviewed, as memes spreaded by Shaffer from the outside of the work. With this approach, memes consisted of Edward's revenge are specified and the process of these revenge memes being transmitted from Edward to Helen is confirmed. By applying the methodology of social science to literary analysis, this paper introduces the advantages of scientific methodology to the understanding of art. The attempts of social science to understand human beings and cultures are steadily developing, and sometimes against intuition, are highly likely to produce correct insight scientifically. I hope this paper will be a significant attempt to create a interface between science and art.
