Sanitary sewer overflows (SSO) is currently the main challenge faced by municipalities. In addition to a large amount of wastewater from seasonal production and living entering the sewer system and causing sanitary sewer overflows (SSO), another major cause of sanitary sewer overflows (SSO) is the rain derived inflow and infiltration (RDII). Excessive RDII will inflow or infiltrate into the sewage pipe system and cause sanitary sewer overflows (SSO), which will cause serious damage to the sewage pipe system, urban buildings, urban environment, and citizens. At the same time, due to global warming and extreme weather in recent years, heavy rain and high temperature will cause more wastewater to inflow or infiltrate into the sewer system and increase the burden of the sewer system and the risk of wastewater overflow. Therefore, it is particularly important to accurately predict the time-series flow in the sewer system, which plays an important role in disaster prevention, disaster reduction, and RDII evaluation.
In recent years, deep learning algorithms have been widely used in complex hydrological time series forecasting and have been proven to be accurate and effective methods. In this paper, we propose a deep learning network model based on Sparse Autoencoder and Bi-LSTM to predict the wastewater flow rate in sewers. This network model consists of the data preprocessing part, the Sparse Autoencoder network part, and the Bi-LSTM network part. We obtained real-world hydrological time series data sets from the Yangju City Sewage Treatment Plant in South Korea through different sensors to verify the performance of our proposed network model. Different experiments have proved that the prediction accuracy of our proposed network model is significantly better than traditional prediction algorithms. For different p-step ahead predictions, our proposed network model has lower prediction errors than traditional prediction models. At the same time, our proposed network model is better at dealing with high-dimensional time series and also exhibits higher prediction accuracy.
Therefore, our proposed network model not only has higher prediction accuracy in real applications but also has more robust.
