It was intended to develop a control technology to improve the sidestream treatment efficiency. The research contents related to the analysis of the operation characteristics of the sidestream full-scale plant (MLE, extended aeration), the development of air supply control technology through conductivity measurement, and the development of the primary sludge control technology based on the solids load ratio were conducted. In addition, it was intended to promote research contents related to the development of chemical agent injection technology to improve biological treatment efficiency and the development of coagulant dispersion injection control technology in the bioreactor. By analyzing the full-scale plant operation data, comparing the removal efficiency of MLE and extended aeration process, and comparing the microbial community characteristics, we tried to provide basic data necessary for the design and operation of the sidestream treatment facility by analyzing the operating characteristics of the sidestream full-scale plant. The T-N removal efficiency of the sidestream treatment process was 75 ~ 80%, and the removal efficiency of organic matter, phosphorus, and SS was more than 97%. As the total nitrogen of the treated sidestream accounts for 9.9 ~ 11.6% of the load on the inflow sewage, it is considered that the efficiency of nitrogen treatment needs to be improved. In the extended aeration process, keeping the DO low was more effective in terms of removing total inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus phosphate. A control technique was needed to keep the concentration of SS flowing into the bioreactor constant and to properly control the amount of air supplied. When the pH is lowered, it is difficult to maintain a continuous nitrification rate, so it was necessary to consider the addition of chemicals such as caustic soda. The removal efficiency of the MLE process was 4.6% higher than the extended aeration process, DOC 4.6%, TOC 9.1%, ammonia nitrogen 21.1%, total inorganic nitrogen 30.5%, phosphate 4.0%, and SS 3.2%. In MLE and extended aeration, Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas were correlated with DOC and ammonia nitrogen. Microorganisms of MLE and extended aeration showed similar community composition. Microorganisms in the incoming sidestream have been shown to have a certain effect on microbes in the MLE and extended aeration process. This study aimed to achieve improved process performance and energy saving by developing a technology to control the air supply of an aerobic basin by measuring the conductivity in the anoxic basin. The seasonal correlation coefficients of conductivity and water quality items were calculated in the order of ammonia nitrogen, total inorganic nitrogen, DOC, and phosphate in the range of 0.5267 – 0.9115. It was found that the conductivity could be used as an operation indicator of the biological treatment process with a correlation coefficient of 0.5 or more. The regression equations for the conductivity and ammonia nitrogen are secured by season, so it is possible to estimate the ammonia nitrogen through the conductivity. The aerobic basin DO can be controlled by the air supply, and it can be seen that it is possible to control the air supply and improve the nitrogen treatment efficiency by directly measuring the conductivity having a high correlation with nitrogen. An empirical formula for estimating the required air volume through conductivity and inflow is presented. The result of automatic control of air supply according to the measured conductivity of anoxic tank during winter season showed that total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency and SDNR were 8.3% and 0.007 g-N/g-MLSS/d higher than actual plant conditions, respectively. During the automatic control period, the air supply/inflow average ratio was 36 (㎥-air/hr)/(㎥/hr), which could reduce the air supply by 21.7% compared to the full-scale plant conditions. By measuring the solids loading rate for the sidestream, it was intended to achieve increased treatment capacity and improved process performance by developing control technologies for primary sludge removal, recirculation, and input. The average value of SS monitoring of the sidestream influent was 2.2 (0.7 ~ 6.3) g/L and the primary clarifier needed treatment in response to high concentration SS and fluctuations. It is judged that the state point analysis based on the actual settling rate can accurately suggest whether the stable operation of primary sludge removal, recirculation, and input is the possible and specific design and operation standards. The automatic withdrawal that controls the underflow withdrawal rate according to the change of the inflow solids loading rate could stably draw out the high-concentration sludge and maintain the SS removal efficiency. It is believed that stable operation is possible even in the sludge recirculation operation, and the treatment capacity of the primary clarifier can be increased more than two times in a full-scale plant. By recirculation of the primary sludge, the TIN (Total Inorganic Nitrogen) removal efficiency in the bioreactor was improved by 24.2 ~ 52.3%, and the phosphate phosphorus removal efficiency was improved by up to 20.1%. The TIN removal efficiency in the bioreactor was improved by 32.6% by the input of primary sludge. VFAs (Volatile Fatty Acids) including acetic acid was produced and the removal efficiency was improved because it was in contact with primary sludge by recirculation and the ratio of major fermentation microorganisms was present at 2.0%. It is determined that 26.4% of the main genus of microorganisms treated with nitrogen and phosphorus exist in the sidestream inflow and the removal efficiency was improved by supplying microorganisms through the input of primary sludge. The development of efficient chemical input technology was to improve the treatment efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus through the effect of DO, pH, and microorganisms on the treatment of sidestream, the effect of inputting chemicals, and microbial community analysis. In the batch experiment, it was found that the removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus increased by adjusting DO and pH. The nitrification rate of microorganisms in the sewage treatment process is 3.6 to 4.0 times higher than that of the sidestream treatment process, so it is believed that the nitrifying microorganisms play an important role. When methanol + caustic soda was added, pH increased by 0.4 and SDNR was 2.7 times higher than that of methanol alone. When methanol+coagulant was added, pH decreased by 0.4, but SDNR was 1.3 times higher than when methanol+caustic soda was added. This result means that the nitrification and denitrification efficiency can be improved only by adding methanol without adding caustic soda, and phosphorus can be removed by additionally adding a coagulant. The type and amount of chemicals input are methanol 176 ppm (V), PACl 20 ppm (V), and the operating conditions of the aerobic basin are DO 1.4 ~ 2.5 mg/L, pH 6.2 ~ 6.9, MLSS 4,000 ~ 5,000 mg/L. Major new microbial genus such as Methylotenera and Hyphomicrobium that use methanol as an external carbon source have appeared. In particular, Methylotenera was judged to be an important microorganism related to nitrogen removal using methanol. The development of a coagulant dispersion injection control technology in the bioreactor consisted of a pilot experiment on the effect of changing the coagulant injection location, performance evaluation of the technology to put a coagulant in the middle of the bioreactor, and suggestions for field application. This was to reduce the amount of coagulant used. The pilot experiment results for sewage showed that the best method was to disperse the aerobic basin and the anoxic basin at three points rather than the conventional coagulant input method at the rear end of the aerobic basin. Next, the input positions in the middle of the anoxic tank and the middle of the aerobic tank were better than the conventional method. In sidestream full-scale plant, the method of adding a coagulant in the middle of the aerobic basin reduced the amount of use by 30.8%, 64.0% compared to that of the conventional method, which was added to the rear end of the aerobic basin. In addition, it was found that the input at the midpoint of the aerobic tank did not significantly affect the biological nitrogen treatment. It was found that the change of the coagulant input location had little effect on the change in the microbial community composition. For field application, a device for dispersing and adding a coagulant to facilitate flow distribution and a method for determining the optimum input point of the coagulant were proposed. Through this, the removal efficiency of SS, nitrogen and phosphorus is improved by optimizing the sidestream, and the overall performance is improved by reducing the pollutant load of the sewage treatment process (Mainstream). In addition, it attempted to reduce operating costs through automatic control and technology for reducing chemical use. The sidestream treatment process is similar to the sewage treatment process, and the control technology developed here is expected to be applicable to the sewage treatment process.
