Ni-rich Li[NixCoyMn1-x-y]O2 (NCM, x≥0.8) layered oxides are the most promising candidate of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to high specific capacity. However, the NCM cathode suffers from structure deterioration and the insufficient cycle life. To address these issues, modified NCM materials by commodification with Li and Ti and mono-substitution by the latter, are proposed. The effect of commodification clearly shows the transformation of primary particles for the NCM, which are oriented to produce densely crystallographic texture on inner secondary particle. Both Li and Ti ions modifications occupy the transition metal (TM) layer in the crystal structure, which leads to not only the decrease in the level of Li+/Ni2+ disorder, but the increase in the structural stability and Li+ chemical diffusivity, respectively. Consequently, Li and Ti commodified NCM (LNCMT) exhibits the enhanced capacity retention rate at room temperature (81 %, after 200th cycle at 0.1 C) and 45 ℃ conditions (61 %, after 400th cycle at 0.1 C). Enlarging the interlayer spaces by commodification will aid to Li+ transporting mechanism to accelerate charge-transfer rate. Therefore, the synergistic effect cope with Li and Ti provides a significant challenge for industrial development and applicability of Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials. Secondly, Lithium- and manganese-rich (LMR) cathode materials show high specific charge capacities of more than 200 mAh g-1, however exhibit poor cycle stability and voltage decay. In this work, a Li1.167Ni0.167Co0.167Mn0.5O2 cathode was synthesized and coated with vanadium phosphate at room temperature by a simple chemical method. Due to surface modification, the electrochemical performance significantly improved as determined by half-cell and full cell tests. An approximately 10 nm thick V2(PO4)3 (VP) layer was coated on the metal oxide, as confirmed by electron microscopy. As determined by electrochemical measurements, the VP-coated LMR layered cathode exhibited a quasi-solid-solution reaction, which resulted in a better electrochemical stability at high working potentials. The enhanced performance of the surface-modified oxide is attributed to the uniformly coated V-P-O layer on the layered oxide, which not only suppressed O2 evolution, but also stabilized the lithium host structure. Furthermore, a stable SEI layer was formed, which protected the cathode structure from electrolyte decomposition, thereby contributing to the enhanced stability with a low voltage decay, as determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analysis. These work presents the possibility of morphology and surface modified layered cathode materials by a facile chemical method for the development of low-cost and high-energy cathode materials for next-generation battery applications.
