In this study, Lignin-free Cellulose and Lignin rich Cellulose were used and investigated how to fabricate cellulose-based films efficiently in order to develop materials based on biomass.
In Chapter 1, to reduce the CNF film production time, the film was fabricated through fiber surface polarity control, near-infrared irradiation, and vacuum filtration. and the properties of the fabricated film were analyzed. Organic solvents(Acetone, Methanol, Ethanol) with different polarity index was used to control the polarity of the fiber surface. Depending on the polarity index of the solvents, the higher the polarity index, the more dense and more robust film was fabricated, and the filmmaking time could be reduced by more than half. In near-infrared irradiation, significant changes in the characteristics of the film due to near-infrared irradiation could not be observed, and when both near-infrared and organic solvents were used, films could be produced in a period of up to 10 times less time than non-infrared film production. In vacuum filtration, the film of 0.02m2 area from 0.1% of the slurry was completed in a few hours. to while in the same concentration, the Solvent Casting method completed the film in a few days. In the vacuum filtration method, different fabrication sizes and drying temperatures could produce films with no significant difference in properties, such as those completed by the Solvent casting method, except for some conditions. Through this work, we can suggest ways to increase the efficiency of CNF film production by reducing the time to de-hydrate CNF slurry and thereby further extend the utilization range of CNF films.
In Chapter 2, to consider ways to increase the utilization of lignocellulose, which has a high residual lignin content, the film was fabricated in two ways. and an effect of the particle size and lignin content on films were investigated. Both methods produced all-cellulose composites, but hydrogen-bonded films that take advantage of the characteristics of cellulose itself and regenerated films that reconstructed cellulose polymer structures had generally different characteristics. Depending on the fabrication method, particle size and residual lignin content have become important factors for film properties. In hydrogen-bonded films, the smaller the particle size of the material, the higher the tensile strength but in regenerated films, the tensile strength of film made of the material with a particle size below a certain level was reduced. The relatively reduced lignin content of about 17% increased tensile strength in both methods. In addition, the optical properties of regenerated films with reduced lignin content have been significantly improved. The results of this study suggest that energy consumption to produce smaller particle sizes in the use of high concentrations of lignin in film production does not result in significant performance improvements, and effective control of lignin content is a way to avail lignocellulose in the film industry.
In Chapter 3, to consider the possibility of a plastic replacement for cellulose film, the characteristics of cellulose film due to the processing of heat pressing and the plasticizing were investigated. Hydrogen-bonded film and regenerated film with the same material were used. and they showed different trends depending on film properties. In the case of hydrogen-bonded film, the apparent density increased during both heat pressure processing and plasticizing, but there was no significant change in the apparent density of regenerated films. In the case of hydrogen-bonded films, films with the most effective strength and elongation were obtained at 100℃ and 5 minutes of heat pressure within the conditions implemented, and plasticizing was also able to achieve the expected effect at 40% of plasticizer ratio. In the regenerated film, plasticizer and hot pressing stabilized in-film water movement or intermolecular bonding, resulting in better performance than non-treated films. From these results, the barrier characteristics of cellulose-based films could be enhanced according to the final purpose, confirming the possibility of being used as an additive or single material to replace plastic.
This study presented the potential for the use of cellulose as an eco-friendly material and the basis for increasing filmmaking efficiency.
