Magnesium Oxide (MgO) is considered a promising carbon dioxide (CO2) capture sorbent due to its abundance in basic sites and relatively low regeneration temperature. However, its application is limited by its low sorption capacity and slow kinetics. Recently, molten alkali nitrate salts and their eutectic mixtures (EM) were found to significantly improve the sorption capacity and kinetics of MgO sorbents for high-temperature CO2 capture applications. Nevertheless, most literature reports on these sorbents reveal that they lack cyclic stability and tend to lose their sorption capacity after multiple sorption-regeneration cycles. Moreover, these sorbents are not yet suitable for industrial applications due to difficulty in material handling brought about by agglomeration, salt melting, and phase changes during reuse. To resolve the issues regarding alkali nitrate salts-promoted MgO sorbents, the cyclic capacity deterioration mechanism must first be realized. The underlying principles and mechanisms for CO2 capture on such sorbents have been established, but actual observation of the system was not yet accomplished. Thus, the direct-observation of the CO2 capture phenomenon on a KNO3-LiNO3 EM-promoted MgO sample was conducted via in situ transmission electron microscopy (in situ TEM). Results reveal that the pseudo-liquid EM undergoes structural rearrangement as MgCO3 evolves from the surface of MgO, resulting in surface roughening and evolution of cloudy structures that stay finely distributed after regeneration. From this, the MgCO3 nucleation mechanism and EM structural rearrangement scheme were derived. These results provide a clear understanding of the sorption-regeneration mechanism and the structural rearrangements involved in EM-MgO sorbents by basing on real-time observation of the system as a whole. Upon knowing the reason behind the decreasing sorption capacity of EM-MgO sorbents, NaNO3-promoted MgO-based composites with stable cyclic capacity were synthesized by using commercially available hydrotalcites as stabilizers. The Pural Mg30-stabilized MgO-NaNO3 sorbent was shown to attain higher and stable overall CO2 sorption performance as compared to bare MgO-NaNO3 after multiple sorption cycles. Further analyses reveal that the hydrotalcites act as templates for MgCO3 by restricting the formation of large and nonuniform product crystallites. It was also found that the hydrotalcites cause a change in the basic sites of the sorbent, which may be attributed to its high interaction with both MgO and NaNO3. Such behavior was not found on pure MgO-NaNO3 and α-Al2O3-stabilized samples, thus proving the unique ability of hydrotalcites and presenting a simple yet effective method of improving the stability of molten salt-promoted sorbents with potential for industrial use. Real-time CO2 sorption observations on supported EM-MgO sorbent was also conducted to obtain a better understanding of the surface phenomenon on supported sorbents and to also help in identifying the exact role of the supports in the sorption process. An EM-MgO-Al2O3 sorbent that can maintain a stable cyclic performance was synthesized, and in situ TEM was used to directly observe the sorption and regeneration phenomenon on the sorbent. It was observed that MgCO3 evolution proceeds with the formation of separated longitudinal mushroom-like branches along the surface of the sorbent, contrary to the surface layer formation observed on unsupported sorbents. This was observed due to the presence of Al2O3, which alters the sorbent surface, redistributes triple-phase boundaries, and directs the formation of MgCO3 towards the MgO active sites, thus avoiding MgCO3 agglomeration and improving the cyclic stability of the sorbent. Hence, a better understanding of the carbonation mechanism and the role of support in solid sorbents were obtained. Finally, encapsulation of the salt promoter with MgO may prevent the loss of active interface by confining the molten promoter within a fixed area inside an MgO shell. A K,Li-NO3 EM in an MgO fiber matrix was synthesized via core-shell electrospinning, and the sorbent achieved relatively high and steady sorption capacities. Results confirmed that the eutectic salt existed in distributed hollow pockets within the MgO fiber matrix and stayed confined within these fixed areas, favorably limiting its movement and redistribution when exposed to high temperatures where it exists in the liquid form. The EM may also be described as a glue that holds the fiber together, while MgO acts as a protective shell that prevents structural changes and rearrangement caused by EM movement, allowing the sorbent to retain its cyclic stability after multiple cycles and demonstrating its potential for industrial use after further improvement. Thus, the microencapsulation of a phase-changing EM material with pure MgO metal oxide was successfully achieved and may be explored for various material applications.
