Telepractice in Speech & Language Therapy(TSLT) is used for various reasons such as the distance between participants, restricted movement due to physical limitations, time efficiency, prevention of infection, etc. The benefits of using TSLT include reduced costs, efficient use of time, and better accessbility. However, despite such benefits, TSLT is not used in the actual field of speech therapy due to reasons such as the limitations of speech therapy testing & coverage of intervention, roles of parents (as a supporter), control of the surrounding environment, etc. In this study, a specially designed survey has been sent to 115 speech-language pathologists(SLP) to find out about the utilization & perception towards TSLT. The results of the review of COVID-19 status of SLP are as follows. First, the 26.2% of the respondents answered that they were having trouble communicating while wearing a mask. In addition, it was shown that 41.8% of the SLP were strictly complying to the quarantine rules while conducting speech therapy. The results of the perception towards TSLT are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in the perception of SLP towards TSLT depending on the clinical experience/background of speech-language pathologists. Second, there was no statistically significant difference in the perception of SLP towards the ‘need’ of TSLT depending on the clinical experience/background of speech-language pathologists. Third, there was a statistically significant difference in the perception of SLP towards TSLT depending on the age group of the participants. 91.3% of the SLP answered that TSLT cannot be performed on infants. At the same time, 67.8% of them responded that TSLT can be performed on school-age children, while 47.8% of them answered that it can be performed on adults & seniors. Fourth, there was a statistically significant difference in the perception of SLP towards TSLT depending on the ‘disorders group’ of the participants. The results are as follows. 56.5% (late talker), 60.9% (intellectual disability), 51.3% (neurologic disorders), 73.9% (swallowing disorders), 79.1% (autism spectrum disorders), 69.6% (hearing disorders) of the SLP answered that it is impossible to apply TSLT to the respective disability groups. At the same time, 47.8% (voice disorders), 62.6% (fluency disorders), 61.7% (language learning disability), 53.9% (articulation disorders), 53.0% (bilingual or dual language person), 46.1% (specific language impairments) of the respondents answered that TSLT can be applied to the respective disability groups. Fifth, there was a statistically significant difference in the perception of SLP towards TSLT depending on the form of speech/language therapy (1:1 therapy, pair therapy, group therapy, parent counseling). 65.2% of the SLP answered that 1:1 therapy can be applied, while 63.5% (pair therapy), 80.0% (group therapy) of them answered that such methods (respectively) cannot be applied for TSLT. On the other hand, 66.1% of them responded that parent counseling can be applied. There was no statistically significant difference in the utilization status of TSLT by speech-language pathologists. It was shown that 50.4% of them are not using TSLT because they did not know about TSLT, 44.3% of them answered that they knew about TSLT but aren’t using it, 2.6% of them answered that they are using TSLT right now, and 2.6% of them answered that they used TSLT in the past but not now. The costs they (SLP) charge for TSLT are as follows. 60.0% of the respondents answered that they charge the same amount as a normal speech therapy session, while 28.7% of them answered that they charge less compared to a normal speech therapy session, and 11.3% of them answered that they charge more compared to a normal speech therapy session. The overall level of interest and participation of SLP for TSLT was higher than normal. In addition, 32.9% of the SLP answered that it would be nice if there would be a direct/indirect training session & clinical guidance that could help introduce TSLT for people with disabilities. This study is meaningful in that it has successfully examined the perception of SLP on TSLT, providing basic data for future researches on TSLT. Regarding the follow-up study related to the subject of TSLT, an investigative study that includes various participants that use TSLT is required. Furthermore, a study that focuses on the intervention/evaluation of participants with various characteristics using TSLT is necessary.
