Hydrogen is widely used as a reactive gas in the semiconductor industry, but in recent years, the amount of usage is continuously increasing due to its effectiveness in improving certain characteristics such as removing impurities. However, hydrogen is an easily explosive material, which may lead to serious industrial accidents involving fatalities or injuries from suffocation, explosion, and combustion. Therefore, safety must be secured primarily during the production, storage, and use of hydrogen. The form of hydrogen is maintained before use and then transformed and vanished after use in most industries. In the semiconductor industry, however, the hydrogen used for improving the characteristics maintains its form even after use and then is exhausted. Safety must be secured for the hydrogen used for such a purpose until it is vanished in an exhaust gas removal unit and exhausted. Research on securing the safety of hydrogen during production and storage has been constantly conducted. However, there is lack of research on securing the safety of hydrogen when exhaust after use. This study, therefore, was conducted to eliminate the hazard by substituting the hydrogen used in the semiconductor industry into a safe state before being exhausted within the scope of not generating additional greenhouse gases. The ultimate purpose of this study is to provide solutions for preventing fire and explosion due to hydrogen, thereby avoiding serious industrial accidents. In this research, proposes a methodology for solving problems in preventing serious industrial accidents by exhaust hydrogen, which is highly flammable and strongly explosive, in a safe state as the use of hydrogen becomes more common in the semiconductor industry. A hydrogen exhaust safety system is constructed based on a hydrogen plasma treatment unit (HPTU) for processing hydrogen was developed using function oriented search (FOS), which is one of the TRIZ tools. A verified technique in the renewable energy industry has been found with the FOS method; HPTU was developed that can convert hydrogen into a vapor by combining with oxygen in which a core technology is applied to convert a greenhouse gas into clean energy using a plasma carbon conversion unit (PCCU). For evaluating HPTU, an experiment was conducted with a split-plot design for three factors including RF power, hydrogen, and oxygen which are moderating variables. When the correlation between each factor and the decomposition rate was analyzed, the decomposition rate was higher as the hydrogen level is lower and when hydrogen to oxygen ratio and RF power are higher. The hydrogen exhaust safety system was constructed by integrating HPTU and the existing system; physical contradiction of the overload in the exhaust gas removal unit and securing safety after the establishment is solved through separation in condition. Specifically, a great amount of dilution nitrogen is input in a condition requiring safety, while a minimum amount of dilution nitrogen is input when none or a small amount of hydrogen is used, thus lowering the overload of the exhaust gas removal unit. Constructing the hydrogen exhaust safety system was carried out based on a custom-designed factorial design experiment. The optimal condition was proposed that will satisfy the exhaust concentration of 1% which is the non-explosion limit of hydrogen through a multiple regression analysis of main effect, interactions, and polynomial. Utilization of TRIZ in the semiconductor industry also has been proven to be effective in which the FOS method involves using a technology that has been verified in other industries for prompt application and elimination of uncertainties. Furthermore, applying the principle of separation to resolve physical contradiction has been proven to be effective in the semiconductor industry. The development of a HPTU and construction of hydrogen exhaust safety system can contribute to technical advancements of the semiconductor industry by using a large amount of hydrogen, while preventing serious industrial accidents by exhaust hydrogen in a safe state after use. A HPTU and hydrogen exhaust safety system can be extensively used in various industries; further research on safety management of lifecycle from formation to the vanishment after use is expected to be conducted in the future.
