Global warming, which results from the accumulation of greenhouse gases(GHG), such as carbon dioxide(CO2), emitted into the atmosphere, has emerged with the industrial revolution, and is currently considered one of the most significant causes of various extreme weather events. To address the environmental issues sparked by this climate crisis, Eco-friendly building facilities are drawing considerable attention in reducing carbon emissions and are currently being implemented in numerous area. However, despite the positive effects of these facilities, such as the reduction of GHG emissions, many unexpected problems have arisen after their operation for an extended period, bringing into question exactly how well these buildings operate.
The scope of the study is limited to three types of Eco-friendly building facilities that are applied to existing structures: ground-source heat pump(GSHP), rainwater harvesting, and building-integrated vegetation(BIV) systems operated by the West Gimhae Culture Center, which has been designated as the target building. This study ultimately aims to determine the development direction of Eco-friendly building facilities through comparisons and reviews of previous studies with problems derived from operation data collected by long-term monitoring over the past two years from the opening of the target building in June 2018 to the present, August 2020.
In this study, first, the characteristics and problems derived from operating GSHPs were identified as inefficiency caused by irregular operation rates by season and hour. As a development direction for this system, we suggest measures to control multiple unit operations.
Second, the characteristics and problems associated with operating rainwater harvesting facilities were found to be the high irregularity in the amount of rainwater flowing into a storage tank by season, the low amount of rainwater used for landscaping. For the development direction, the methods to efficiently position and utilize two storage tanks depending on their applications, were proposed to utilize external make-up water or underground permanent drainage systems during dry seasons and diversify the applications of rainwater.
Third, the characteristics and problems associated with operating the BIV system were found to be cracks and leaks in the root-proofing layer. The development direction for the BIV system includes insertion of copper sheets to the root-proofing layer, reinforcement of the waterproofing layer.
As a result of operating the Eco-friendly building facilities, various problems have arisen. However, it is believed that more stable and efficient Eco-friendly building facility operations will be possible if these are backed by in-depth research to seek improvement directions and systematic technological development.
