This study aimed to investigate characteristics in attitudes toward science and career maturity of science high school students participating in club activities, to analyze differences by variables such as gender, grade level, GPA, and club-related subject areas, and to explore students’ perception of advantages from club activities. Research subjects consisted of 231 (out of 261 in total, 88.5%) students participating volunteerly with 94 (96.9%) of 1st grade, 79 (82.3%) of 2nd grade, and 58 (85.3%) of 3rd grade at a science high school in a metropolitan city. In February 2020, the research subjects responded to a questionnaire on attitudes toward science and career maturity, and a survey instrument of open-ended and multiple choice questions about club activities. The quantitative data were gathered and descriptive statistics, t-test, and one-way ANOVA using SPSS 22.0 statistical program were calculated. The qualitative data were analyzed by employing content analysis and main categories of contents by indicative thinking based on similarity. The research results were as follows. First, science high school students showed a significant difference in their attitude toward science. For gender, male students were significantly higher than female students in 'curiosity', 'critical-mindedness', and 'creativity' among evaluation factors of scientific attitude, and female students were significantly higher than male students in 'voluntariness'. For grade level, the 2nd graders were significantly higher than the 1st graders only in 'cognition of science' among the evaluation factors of science awareness. For GPA, the high GPA group students were significantly higher than the low GPA group students in science awareness. For 'science anxiety' of interest in science, there are significant differences among three groups with showing the highest in the high GPA group and the lowest in the low GPA group students. It was also found that students of the high GPA group showed significantly high in ‘voluntariness’ than students of the low GPA group. Significant differences in ‘cognition of science’ were shown higher in club activities related to science areas than related to non-science including math and IT areas. For ‘interest toward science related careers’ in science interests and ‘creativity’ in scientific attitudes, students in science related clubs showed significantly higher than those in non-science related clubs. Second, students of science high school showed a significant difference in career maturity. For gender, female students were significantly higher in 'attitude toward job' among sub-areas of attitude than male students. For GPA, the high GPA group students showed significantly higher in ‘self-understanding’ than the low GPA group students. However, there was no significant difference among grade levels, science vs. non-science-related clubs, and seven subject-related clubs. There were significant correlations between attitudes toward science and career maturity. ‘Attitude’ areas of career maturity has a positive (+) correlation with 'cooperation (r=.571)’, and 'voluntariness (r=583)' of scientific attitude in attitudes toward science, and ‘ability’ areas of career maturity has a positive (+) correlation with scientific interest (r=.501) and scientific attitude (r=.634) in attitudes toward science. Third, there were differences in characteristics and benefits from participations in various clubs. Students perceived characteristics of club activities as ‘preparing participations in fairs and exhibitions’, ‘designing and conducting experiments’, and ‘experiencing advanced devices of experiments’ and so on. Many students in science high school expressed their future jobs as 'engineering and technology related specialists', and 'natural science related specialists', and 'information and communication technology related specialists'. The satisfaction with club activities appeared 86.4% of students responded with 'very satisfied' and 'satisfaction'. The highest satisfaction rate was shown by students in chemistry and informatics related clubs. The most important advantages of club activities were 'experiencing advanced devices of experiments', 'building up social relationships', 'preparing participations in fairs and exhibitions', and 'improving ability of inquiry and skills of conducting experiments'. In addition, there were differences in recognition of advantages, attitudes toward science, and career maturity depending on the levels of satisfaction with club activities. Students with high satisfaction recognized 'experiencing advanced devices of experiments', 'building up social relationships' and 'preparing participations in fairs and exhibitions' as their main strengths, while students with low satisfaction recognized 'interest, atmosphere, and personal research activities' as their main advantages in addition to the previous three advantages. For attitudes toward science, students with high club satisfaction were significantly higher than those with low club satisfaction in all three subcategories of science awareness, interest in science, and scientific attitudes. For career maturity, students with high club satisfaction were significantly higher than those with low club satisfaction in the attitude areas and attitude toward job among sub-areas of attitude. Fourth, students as a leader in club activities had positive effects on their attitudes toward science and career maturity. During in-depth interview, these students who were active as club leaders, invested 30% of their time in school life to club activities. They were convinced that through club activities they achieved remarkable improvement in scientific interest, scientific attitude and ability of career maturity. In conclusions, club activities in a science high school have a significant effect on enhancing students' attitudes toward science and career maturity. In particular, students with high club satisfaction showed significantly higher attitudes toward science and career maturity than students with low satisfaction. In order to improve the educational effect of club activities, reflecting the fact that students who had high club satisfaction recognized them as advantages such as experiencing advanced devices, preparing participations in fairs and exhibitions, building up social relationship and friendships. And students should participate self-directedly and autonomously in planning and managing club activities. Further, teachers should provide human and physical resources for students’ conducting inquiry activities as well as relevant information about fairs and exhibitions so that students maintain club activities progressively. It is expected that the research results are utilized for developing new programs to effectively achieve education goals, to help students’ self-realization and to facilitate their exhibition of potentials as science gifted students in a science high school.
