Recently, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have received great attention as the most suitable energy storage devices for electric vehicles (EVs) because they can realize high energy and power densities. It is important to further improve the batteries to achieve high energy densities to extend the driving mileages of the EVs. Lithium transition metal oxides, which are used as cathode materials in LIBs, are important factors deciding the energy density and operating voltage that allow realization of high energy density in the battery. To increase the energy density of the battery, the capacity and voltage of the cathode material are increased and the initial lithium loss of the anode material having high capacity is reduced. Therefore, in this study, high capacity of the high-Ni NCM cathode material is realized for practical use of the sacrificial cathode that compensates for the initial lithium loss of the anode material with high capacity. In Chapter I, the LiNbO3 surface coating of the high-Ni NCM cathode material is studied. NCM is a lithium transition metal oxide cathode material composed of Ni, Co, and Mn. Since Ni has the advantage of being able to increase the reversible capacity, synthesis and design of NCM materials with Ni content of 80 % (NCM811) have been explored to achieve high energy density. However, NCM materials with a high content of Ni cause poor cycle performance and side reactions with electrolytes owing to crack formation after cycling as well as formation of residual lithium and NiO phases on the surface. Therefore, we propose a surface coating with LiNbO3 onto the NCM811 cathode material to minimize undesirable side reactions and improve thermal stability. In addition, the experiments were conducted by controlling the crystallinity temperature to confirm the effects of the crystallinity of LiNbO3 on the performance of NCM811. Hence, the surface coating of LiNbO3 was verified through various structural analyses, and the cycle and rate capability characteristics were improved through electrochemical evaluations. In particular, crystalline LiNbO3-coated NCM811 exhibits improved cycle performance at a high operating temperature of 60 °C. Finally, through degradation analyses after cycling, the electrochemical stability was verified to be effectively improved by the LiNbO3 coating. In Chapter II, Fe bulk doping of the Li6CoO4 sacrificial cathode material is presented. The sacrificial cathode material is a lithium transition metal oxide with high initial irreversible capacity. Recently, the silicon and tin compounds anode material having high capacities have attracted interest, but it is difficult to commercially use these materials because they have the disadvantage of large initial lithium loss. The sacrificial cathode can compensate for this initial lithium loss to improve the energy density of the battery. Several types of sacrificial cathodes with these properties exist, such as Li2NiO2, Li5FeO4, and Li6CoO4. Li2NiO2 has a relatively low initial irreversible capacity, and Li5FeO4 has a high operating voltage that causes electrolyte side reactions; hence, Li6CoO4 is suitable for use as a sacrificial cathode. However, since Li6CoO4 contains a large quantity of lithium, the oxidation number of the transition metal changes during delithiation, and O2- is oxidized to generate oxygen when the limit is reached. The generation of oxygen may cause degradation of the cell owing to volume expansion and side reactions with the electrolyte. Therefore, we propose a bulk doping of Fe in the Li6CoO4 sacrificial cathode to suppress oxygen generation during charge by improving the structural stability. As a result, the secondary phases and impurities from bulk doping of Fe were verified through various structural analyses to not be formed, and the structure of Li6CoO4 was maintained. In addition, it was proven by Density-functional theory (DFT) calculation that Fe bulk doping was effective for improving the structural stability of Li6CoO4, and the voltage behavior due to delithiation was consistent with the DFT calculation and actual measurement results. Finally, degradation analysis was conducted after cycling to confirm the degree of oxidation of the lithium metal, and it was verified that the bulk doping of Fe was effective at suppressing the generation of oxygen when charging Li6CoO4.
