The purpose of this study is to identify variables that determine voluntary participation in elderly people aged 65 or older residing in local communities. Specifically, first, we determine whether or not to participate in volunteering according to the social and demographic characteristics of the elderly. Second, the difference in perception of volunteering and social support according to the social and demographic characteristics of the elderly is investigated. Third, the influence of elderly people's perception of volunteering and social support on volunteer participation. To collect data, a survey was conducted in December 2019 targeting 300 elderly people living in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Seosan, Chungnam. Finally, 286 copies were used for analysis, excluding 14 questionnaires with many non-responses. As a result of the study, first, 75 people (26.2%) of the elderly who participated in volunteer work, and 211 (73.8%) of the elderly who did not participate, and those who participated were as low as 1/4 of the total. Second, the rate of volunteering was high in the case of married elderly people and those who graduated from middle and high school. Third, in the case of married people, the higher the level of education, the higher the level of seeing volunteering as a'social responsibility' when the health status and family relationship are normal or good, and when the health status is moderate or good, the level of volunteering is'social recognition'. The level of this was high, and those who were married and had moderate or good economic conditions and good health were more likely to view volunteering as a'personal achievement'. Fourth, in the case of women, when the economic status, health status, and family relations are normal or good, and when living in a city, they receive a lot of'emotional support' from the surrounding interpersonal networks, and their economic status, health status, and family relations are normal or good. In the case, it received a lot of'service support' from surrounding interpersonal networks. Finally, in the case of women, they received a lot of “economic support” from the neighboring interpersonal networks when the economy was in good condition and the health was moderate or good. Finally, as a result of examining the effect of perception and social support on whether or not to participate in volunteer service, it was found that social responsibility among volunteer awareness and service support among social support had a significant effect. Among social responsibility and service support, the predicted level of social responsibility was higher.
