To prevent global warming caused by resource depletion and greenhouse gases, interest and research for making efficient use of electric and renewable energy have increased through environmental policies around the world. In new changes of the electric energy generation, storage, and application in connection with distributed power sources, the energy storage system (ESS) can be utilized for a variety of power system as the most representative example. In order to stabilize the output and reduce the maximum power demand, ESS not only uses energy efficiently, but also a method of using it as an emergency power by replacing a diesel generator is proposed. ESS is not only available for supplying electric energy efficiently due to the reduction of the maximum power demand and for stabilizing the output, but also it can be as an emergency power by replacing a diesel generator. However, since there is no specific calculation method for applying the ESS to distributed system as an emergency power source, the PG method, the existing emergency generator capacity calculation formula, has been applied to the ESS to calculate the PCS capacity. The calculation can occurs some problem that it does not take into account of the different reactive power supply characteristics of the emergency generator (synchronous generator) and the PCS. Most of the fire fighting loads are large loads using squirrel cage fluids Most of the fire-fighting facilities have a large loads like a squirrel case induction motors, and the power factor is lowered to about 0.2 to 0.3 at start. The apparent power increases instantaneously due to the rapidly increased reactive power. This phenomenon causes the terminal voltage to drop sharply and the motor to fail to start. Recently, the battery capacity of the existing emergency power ESS is calculated by applying two hours to the power of the generator (kW), which is an irrational method because of insufficient grounds. This paper proposed the PE method which is one of the calculation methods, that satisfies the requirements for provision of emergency power notified in the Safety Standard (NFSC) and considers the reactive power supply characteristics of PCS. Also, based on the legal minimum supply time for each emergency load, a method for calculating the battery capacity in consideration of efficiency and aging rate was proposed. The proposed PE method was applied to the simulation model of an apartment housing case, and the applicability was verified by performing a start simulation of a large electric motor. ESS utilizing for emergency power has higher initial investment cost than diesel generators, but economic feasibility can be established by applying the ESS used in DR in parallel. In the case of the emergency ESS, the possibility of fire is very high because the state of full charge must be maintained at all times. Using the DR ESS in parallel improves the supply reliability of the PCS and the life time of the batteries and effects to the fire prevention. In this paper, the proposed method have stability and reliability by describing a reasonable plan for applying energy storage devices as emergency power sources, and is expected efficiently to use of electric energy through dissemination and diffusion.
