About 2.3 million transformers are in service nationwide to supply electricity to customers. If the capacity of a transformer is higher or lower than the load, it may lead to economic losses. Therefore, utilities use their own standards to gauge transformers to be installed to acquire appropriate capacity. However, these standards have problems such as inability to reflect various power demand patterns and dependence on designers’ experiences. This study analyzed these problems and proposed a scientific and rational transformer capacity determination method using customer information and public data. First of all, calculation and comparison of the transformer availability rate using the power consumption data of NDIS and AMI has been performed. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that there is trend of installing a transformer in overcapacity than required. This is believed to be due to the application of an demand factor that does not reflect regional characteristics, and the designer's discretionary decision about the future load growth rate. In order to overcome these problems and determine a reasonable transformer capacity, this study has developed an AI model that predicts the maximum power demand using real-time power consumption, public data (population, cadastral data, etc.) and XGBoost algorithm. To diagnose the necessity of AI model development, customer information such as power consumption and public data has been preprocessed and merged, and then the demand factor for a specific area has been calculated. As a result, this study has found that current demand factor classified into downtown areas, residential areas, and rural areas does not reflect changes in the load pattern, but the application of the demand factor according to the types of contract (general use, residential use, etc.) is effective. Accordingly, a demand prediction AI algorithm has been developed in this study by applying machine learning techniques. In addition, in order to minimize the inaccuracy of customer information and reflect regional characteristics when applying the demand prediction model, the concept of energy density for each region was introduced to calculate the maximum power demand by dividing the region into a certain size of units. By applying this, the energy density was calculated for each area by dividing a specific area of Korea into units of 500m×500m, and after dividing them into three stages of high, medium, and low, the maximum load was predicted for the next five years. As a result of calculating the appropriate transformer capacity based on this, it was shown that excessive investment is being made because overcapacity transformers have been installed in over 90% of the area. In addition, to verify the accuracy of the maximum demand prediction model presented in this paper, a k-fold cross-validation was conducted to confirm the validity of the proposed model and to examine the importance of variables that influenced the maximum demand prediction. By applying the demand factor calculated through the development of the maximum load prediction model and the future load increase rate, an improvement plan for the newly established transformer capacity calculation method has been proposed. Finally, this study made a technology policy proposal so the maximum load prediction model developed in this study can be expanded and utilized in the method of establishing a transmission and distribution facility plan as well as the integrated control of renewable energy through the power MAP, in addition to the improvement of the distribution transformer capacity calculation method.
